Best Form of Calcium from Food?

Posted by Maz on November 17, 2003 at 15:37:07:

Hi,

I take a magnesium supplement because it keeps my leg cramps and dysarrythmia at bay. However, although I do drink a little organic milk and sometimes have organic yoghurt, I dont eat much else that would give me much calcium. I dont know really. I eat veg regularly. Does that give you calcium? I dont know apart from dairy what gives you calcium, but I have been thinking you have to make sure you get calcium, especially if taking a magnesium supplement.

What is the best food to have for calcium. I have read that dairy is not necessarily a very good form of calcium.

Thanks for you input.

Maz

Don't count on the unabsorbable calcium from dairy to do you any good.

If you're taking magnesium then I'd say you *definitely* should be taking calcium too. Stay away from c. carbonate; it's garbage. Per Dr. Stoll's (and most on the board's) recommendation I take Metagenics calcium hydroxyapatite. Take your mag on an empty stomach and the calcium after a meal in a 2:1 calcium:magnesium ratio.

Of course, everyone should get plenty of sunlight for conversion to vitamin D.

Hi. Thanks, but I have not heard of the calium H ... that you mentioned. Has it got a proper name? I mean if I go into the health shop what do I ask for?

some greens give calcium, collard greens the most.

Some soy milks have calcium.

In the US, many commercial orange juices are fortified with calcium.

Tofu has calcium if its coagulant is calcium chloride. The other popular coagulant doesn't give it an improved calcium content.

I have always taken calcium carbonate and even when I had a horrible soda addiction which depletes calcium and didn't eat any very good forms of dietary calcium or a multivitaming, I always had very good blood work, blood calcium levels were great and my bone density is great....what is the problem exactly with C carbonate?

Normally supplements on an empty stomach make me puke too but this doesn't (Metagenics magnesium glyconate). If you take mag with food you will decrease its absorption.

Then look it up. Archives and the Internet might be good places. NMI

I don't think that is necessarily correct. Magnesium needs an acid environment to be absorbed, which usually means with a meal. Sometimes people have to take the mag on an empty stomach because they do not have enough stomach acid to break down the mag and a meal.

Generally, i think it is better to take mag with a meal to make sure there is sufficient acid in the environment to help break down the mag, but if you have insufficient stomach acid, you might have to take it on an empty stomach.

Hi, Maz.

Just remember that the ratio of calcium to phosphorus in any food is what determines whether it is a good source of calcium or not. Low phosphorus in relationship to calcium is what you want.

Go to your lending library reference section and ask for a book that lists foods and their mineral content.

Let us know what you learn.

Nope, this has nothing to do with stomach acid, which is not an issue for me. It has everything to do with absorption.
