Chewable Calcium for Kids (help)?

Posted by Mom on April 08, 2001 at 14:51:42:

I'm looking for a good chewable calcium product for kids. I don't mind if it has sugar in it. I just want something that has a good form of calcium (with mag and zinc if that's best) that their bones can really use and that they will take without a fuss every day. Does anyone have any recommendations? What about "Viactiv" although it is supposedly for women?

I need a good calcium supplement for myself too.

I don't know what Walt may think of this but the doctor who does the bone density tests in my area recommends three Ultra Tums per day along with a multivitamen. And no other calcium supplement. They now have a low-sodium Tum.

Hi, Sally.

Your doc must have slept through that class in medical school--or else he has been watching too much TV! Shame on him. And to think he charges for that kind of misinformation.

One of the basic facts about digestion is that minerals cannot be absorbed without stomach acidity. It REALLY bugs me that the TUMs manufacturers are stil getting away with the ridiculous advertisement that people should take TUMs because they have calcium in them!!! The very function of TUMs assures that no calcium or magnesium COULD be absorbed from them! The TUMs not only prevents those minerals from being absorbed but chronic use also inhibits the absorbtion of all of the rest of the minerals.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Thank you for clearing that up, Walt. I'm just shaking my head. Do you think the company pays him to say that?

Mom, do you know how to search the archives? The red banner at the top has a search box. If you type in "calcium supplementation" you will log into a whole list of threads (or posts that are linked under one heading) and find some suggestions. I read one from Dr. Stoll stating he takes "calapatite/boron" from a company called Metagenics. (They are in Vitamen Shoppe catalogues under Ethical Nutrients.) Can't remember their website name. Anyway, check out the archives, I think I saw something for children as well.

Hi, Sally.

No. However, you (and everyone else) would be AMAZED at where physicians get a lot of their information. He had to get this off the TV and just put no thought into it at all.

Namaste`

Walt
