Hi,
I was sufferering from tetany and my doctor put me on
calcium supplements. These did not improve things
until I started taking magnesium as well. Over the past
6 months I stopped taking the calcium, but carried on
with the magnesium and I have started to feel faint and
shaky after taking magnesium and have terrible pains
in my legs and tingling in my face, hands and feet.
I stopped taking calcium as I thought after reading alot
of information that I just had magnesium deficiency and
just taking it alone would improve things quicker.
My doctor cannot understand why the magnesium is
making me feel faint and very shaky and weak, when it
is supposed to have the opposite effect.
I am now starting to take calcium again 1g and
magnesium 500mg. Any advice? Do you think I am
doing the right thing?
Thankyou,
Melanie

Melanie,
Any time you take large doses of a mineral, you need to be careful to get a balance of other complimentary nutrients. Especially with minerals, an overabundance of one can lead to a deficiency in others. You can actually create a vit./min. deficiency just by being overly selective in the supplement regimine. If you're going to take a lot of magesium, it's a good idea to stay on the calcium. Personally, I prefer to take a whole food supplement, which removes the burden of constantly formulating. Good luck.

Dear Peter,
Thanks for reply, although not sure what you mean by a
whole food supplement?
I am still unsure as what ratio to take
calcium/magnesium, there seems to be alot of
conflicting advice.

To the best of my knowledge your body can not absorb calcium with out magnesium and vice versa.

Melanie, a whole food supplement is, in essence, compressed FOOD. The makers grow plants that are nutrient rich and, with cold processing methods, condense these into tablets. Since they are food, you can take them on an empty stomach, and these tablets dissolve easily in the intestines. I don't take so-called "natural" synthetic vitamins and minerals (except for chelated zinc and copper) because food-source nutrients are obviously more synergistic in the human body. I personally take MegaFood brand, but there are others. Ask your HFS and they will help you. Take care.

Hi, Melanie.
Your parathyroid glands are supposed to do all this balancing for you. I have never heard of anyone having what you are describing without having a hormonally functional tumor of the parathyroid tissue.
I would say that you need to see an endocrinologist to find out EXACTLY what you have. Let us know.
If he finds nothing, you have terminal bracing and THAT is pretty easy to resolve.
