A family friend (80 year old man who until recently did not seem this old - pretty strong and healthy) was just diagnosed by the Mayo Clinic with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. They offered no treatment and have given him two months to live. They told him not to believe things they may read on the internet because there is no treatment for this.
Is there an alternative treatment or is it as hopeless as he has been led to believe?
I have spent the last two hours going through the archives and haven't been able to find enough for this type of cancer to be able to offer them (he and his wife) any information. If anyone knows of some sort of treatment I would really appreciate if you could spell it out for me because I'm going to have to stop my reasearch so I can go over there to support them now.

Scientific research generally follows the pattern that one discovery is often the building block for even greater things. May 2001 brought an exciting development to the science of Microbiology with a new treatment for the cancerous disease Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML). On that date, the FDA approved a drug called Imatinib Mesylate, also known as Gleevec.
Gleevec is revolutionary because it has demonstrated clinically an ability to lower numbers of cancerous cells more effectively then current medications through its ability to target and inhibit the specific cause of their uncontrolled growth.
Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, (CML), is a deadly cancer which affects between 5,000 to 8,000 people per year (FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, 3). This progressive disease is characterized by three stages: chronic, accelerated, and blast. The chronic stage is the initial stage of the disease, and lasts about 4-5 years. During the chronic stage of the disease only minor physical symptoms are present. The disease then progresses into an accelerated phase which last from about 6-18 months, and finally a stage formally called a myeloid blast crisis, which lasts 3 to six months and results in death. The latter two stages of the disease are historically much more difficult to treat than the chronic stage, and show more debilitating physical symptoms.
CML is a cancer which affects the blood and bone marrow, and is essentially an uncontrolled production of white blood cells. White blood cells in healthy amounts are normally beneficial to the body because they help to prevent infection, however the large amounts of abnormal white blood cells produced in CML inhibit this function. The overproduction of white blood cells in CML can be targeted to a chromosome abnormality in leukemic cells which is not present in normal healthy cells.
The specific cause of CML is due to an abnormal chromosome translocation. This translocation occurs between a piece of chromosome 9 and a piece of chromosome 22. This exchange results in a longer than normal chromosome 9, and a shorter chromosome 22. The DNA in chromosome 9 contains a gene called ABL, while chromosome 22 contains a gene called BCR. The shorter combination of the two chromosomes, with a gene labeled BCR-ABL, forms what is known as the Philadelphia Chromosome. This is a tyrosine kinase, which is an enzyme which activates other proteins by adding phosphate to them.The BCR-ABL mutated gene on the Philadelphia chromosome stimulates a tyrosine kinase activity that is unregulated and this activates enzymes important in cell division and growth

Some readers have written to me with enthusiastic anecdotes about their responses to Gleevec. The drug has given a lot of hope and perhaps will eventually be shown to be life extending.
I certainly would not want to deny even a glimmer of hope to any cancer patient. What irks me is not so much the hype surrounding Gleevec, but what its swift approval reveals about the double standard in the appraisal of new cancer treatments.

Just got a very upbeat email from my girlfriend (age 46) who was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer not quite a year ago. Supposedly there is only a 5 to 10 percent chance of cure. I assume they base that on the individuals who undergo chemo and radiation.
She had surgery and then 1 month of chemo. She actually had only 3 treatments of chemo during the month. They charged her 15 thousand dollars! She does not have health insurance.
The chemo didn't work and her oncologist wanted to send her to USC for an experimental treatment. She told me that in her heart-of-hearts she didn't feel it was a safe or healthy thing to do. But we get so scared. She also found out there isn't a doc in this country who will treat cancer using alternative methods. They run a high risk of losing their license to practice medicine!
She opted not to go to USC or have any more chemo. She did a lot of reading of websites on the Internet, bought a juicer, eats only organic produce for the most part, takes supplements and she NOW believes she is well. YIPPPEEEE! That's what her email was about. She told me months ago that she didn't understand how she could have cancer and feel so good.
Anyway, I thought I'd share her story with you and other people on this board. THERE IS HOPE. I wouldn't listen to the docs at the Mayo Clinic. I don't care how good they're supposed to be (I'm from Rochester, Minn., was born in Saint Mary's Hospital, all of our docs worked at the Mayo Clinic.)
I know of a man who at the time was in his 70's who was diagnosed with cancer, given 3 weeks to live and sent home to die. Thanks to a grape juice regimen and supplements, within 1 month he was walking around the block. Within 3 months he was walking a couple of miles a day. Needless to say, he didn't die.
You might try contacting an organization located in Menlo Park, CA I think it's called the Cancer Control Society, not sure. You could find it on the Internet by going to a search engine. They know a lot of people who have cured themselves of various kinds of cancer. They publish books and work on educating the general public to counter the garbage you hear and read about in the mainstream media.

Thanks for the positive message. I would like to correct something that you said about no doctors will treat cancer with alternative medicine.
The Cancer Treatment Centers of America are suppose to use Alternatives in their therapies.
Also, I got some books at the library from the authors of the Definitive Guide To Alternative Medicine. This book was for women's health, and it named the doctors that successfully treated breast cancer, using alternatives.
They are doctors in the U.S. I don't have their names, right now, but I could look it up.

Hi, Flapjacks.
Acute myelogenous leukemia, in a person of this age, is a really terrible problem.
Anything that helps any cancer will help reverse all cancers. At the very worst these approaches can do no harm and will nearly always give relief of symptoms.
See the cancer archives and while they, and you, are digesting that, start him on a strict Macrobiotic diet (See your library for a simple introduction and see if he is willing to do that.) If not, just love him as he is till he goes.

If I had such a diagnosis; I would do whatever it took to use oxygen therapies, buying an ozone sauna from Saul Pressman at plasmafire.com . I'd find someone who uses UV light to treat blood - known sometimes as Photoluminescence or Hematologic Oxidative Therapy (the guy who refined the technique had a clinic in north Georgia 'till he figured out Africa was less regulated - William Campbell Douglass, MD). I'd look at Essiac Tea as it cleans the bloodstream. And Standard Process' sesame oil is cheap and easy and can't hurt so I'd try that. Dr. Budwig had such huge success with tumors with her flaxseed and quark mixture I'd look it all up to see if there's any mention of leukemia. And of course, I'd do some actual research on the net instead of just on my hard drive (of things I've saved that looked interesting at the moment.) I'd take some C-Herb and see what Cancell has to offer or something similar. And I'd only eat raw juices, and bone broth if I needed protein for strength. I'd eliminate flouride and chlorine and mercury and any other odd things...like continuous EMF field exposure. Lots of other things I'd look into trying. SLP

A quantitative structure-activity relationship for antitumor activity of long-chain phenols from Ginkgo biloba L.

With the aim of obtaining compounds with strong antitumor activity, a quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) of antitumor phenolic compounds (long-chain phenols) was derived using the Hansch- Fujita equation. The ED50 values against Chinese hamster V-79 cells were analyzed in terms of log P as the hydrophobic parameter and the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO) calculated by using the modified neglect of differential overlap (MNDO) method as the electronic parameter, by means of multiple regression analysis. It was found that the activities mainly depended on log P (an optimum log P of 8.3) and a low-lying ELUMO value. 4- Undecylcatechol, selected on the basis of the above results, exhibited strong antitumor activity against Sarcoma 180 ascites and P- 388 lymphocytic leukemia.

Major new risk factor for heart disease discovered
VANCOUVER, CANADA. It is becoming increasingly evident that an elevated blood level of homocysteine is a potent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Recent studies also suggest that high homocysteine levels may be associated with kidney disease, psoriasis, breast cancer, and acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Extensive past research has shown a close link between the development of neural-tube defects in babies and the mother's homocysteine level prior to and during pregnancy. Researchers at the University of British Columbia have just released a major report which summarizes the current knowledge about homocysteine and its effect on health. Homocysteine is formed in human tissues during the metabolism of methionine, a sulfur-containing essential amino acid. A normal, desirable level is 10 micromol/L or less. A level of 12 micromol/L is considered borderline and levels of 15 micromol/L or above are considered to be indicative of increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Several factors (age, smoking, vitamin deficiencies, and genetic abnormalities) have been linked to increased homocysteine levels. Medications that interact with folate such as methotrexate, carbamazepine, phenytoin, and colestipol/niacin combinations have also been linked to increased homocysteine levels. The researchers reviewed 23 studies dealing with the association between atherosclerosis and homocysteine levels and found that patients with vascular diseases had an average level of homocysteine that was 26 per cent higher than the level in healthy subjects. One study found that a homocysteine level of 4 micromol/L above normal corresponds to a 41 per cent increase in the risk of developing vascular disease. Another study estimates that the lives of 56,000 Americans could be saved every year if average homocysteine levels were lowered by 5 micromol/L. The researchers conclude that abnormally high homocysteine levels are a potent risk factor for cardiovascular and several other diseases. They point out that elevated homocysteine levels can, in most cases, be safely and effectively lowered by supplementation with as little as 400 micrograms per day of folic acid. Other researchers have found that a combination of folic acid (0.4-10 mg/day), vitamin B-12 (50-1000 micrograms/day), and vitamin B-6 (10-300 mg/day) is highly effective in lowering homocysteine levels. Anyone with leukemia should take up to 2 - 6 perles of sesame seed oil a day, or eat 3 - 9 tablespoons of sesame seed butter a day.
I know this personally because my mom's platelets were down and they wanted an oncologist to do a bone marrow test. Standard Process Sesame Seed Oil brought them up to perfect.
The doctor was impressed but didn't ask how they came up. Typical. He knows I do nutrition too. Yet they push business his wife's direction because she is a dietician.
Used to be called Complex T (thrombocte). FDA made them change it. It is for any severe blood conditions. It builds up the red blood cell count. Good product if you need it.

In recent animal studies, Indian researchers have found that turmeric and its active ingredient can inhibit cancer. Not only can it help prevent cancer formation in the first place, it also inhibits progression in both the early and advanced stages. It has even been found to be toxic to cancer cells of bone marrow leukemia (J Am Coil Nutr 92;11(2):192-8) (Carcinogenesis 93;14(3):493-6).

Has the ultimate cancer cure arrived? PTI (Hyderabaad, May 28)
INDIAN CANCER researchers have taken a giant step on the road to
discovering the ultimate cancer cure by developing a drug that
selectively targets the cancer cells without harming the healthy
ones.
Researchers in Kolkata claim that patients in "very advanced stages"
of cancer for whom all other treatments had failed have been brought
back to "excellent" health with the help of a drug formulation they
have developed after research spanning more than a decade.
"We have what we think magic bullet against cancer," says Manju Ray,
a biochemist at the Indian Association of the Cultivation of Science
(IACS) where the drug was developed under a project funded by the
Department of Science and Technology and the Council of Scientific
and Industrial Research.
Most currently available anti-cancer drugs are toxic because they
also damage the normal cells. Ray says the IACS formulation,
containing "Methylglyoxal" as the lead ingredient, combats only the
diseased cells, the cherished goal of cancer researchers worldwide.
Methylglyoxal is a metabolite in the human body produced during
glucose breakdown.
Others involved in the project are Swapna Ghosh of IACS, Manoj Kar
and Subhankar Ray of the University College of Science, and Santajit
Datta, a medical practitioner. Results of human trial conducted by
them with the new drug have recently appeared in the Indian Journal
of Physics.
While Americans are going ga-ga with their new anti-cancer
drug "Glivec" - that was featured on the cover of May 28 issue of
Time magazine - the low-profile, cash-strapped Kolkata researchers
have been working quietly for over a decade shunning publicity until
they obtained proof from human trials nine weeks ago.
According to their published paper, the Methylglyoxal-based
forumulation had "a dramatic positive effect on the patients".
For instance, the condition of 11 out of the 19 patients treated -
most of them in a very advanced stage when the treatment began -- are
now stated to be in "excellent physical condition". Five are in
stable condition and only three died during the course of the study.
Since the submission of the paper, the number of patients treated has
crossed 40 mark with more than 70 per cent success, according to
Manju Ray.
Most remarkable fact, according to the scientists was that
Methylglyoxal was successful against different types of cancer
unlike "Glivec" which targets only the chronic myeloid leukemia.
Those whose health returned to "excellent" condition after treatment
with Methylglyoxal included patients in "a very advanced stages" of
colon cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and
cancers of ovary, breast, liver, lung, bone, gall bladder, pancreas
and oral cavity.
The patients were inducted for the trial, from January to June 2000,
after obtaining permission from the Drug Controller General of India,
the scientists said. The drug was administered orally for about six
months with gradual reduction of daily dosage from the initial 25
milligrams per kilogram of body weight.
Researchers said development of the drug was preceded by years of
basic research involving human cancer cells in culture and animal
experiments that showed that Methylglyoxal selectively killed the
cancer cells without affecting normal cells by exploiting "a very
significant" biochemical difference between the two.
Explaining the mechanism of action, the scientists said cancer cells
required a large amount of energy providing substance called ATP
(Adenosine-5-Triphosphate) for survival.
"Methylglyoxal inactivates the enzyme (Glyceraldehyde-3- Phosphate
Dehydrogenase) needed for ATP production in cancer cells and thereby
starves them to death. Normal cells remain unaffected."
Manju ray said that chemists knew Methylglyoxal molecule for about
four decades and its anti-cancer effects in animals had also been
studied. "But surprisingly, no one bothered to initiate further
research leading to human trials," she said.
The researchers said concern in some quarters about safety of
Methylglyoxal were not borne out from the clinical trials, which
showed that in combination with protective agent like Ascorbic Acid
and vitamins, the drug Methylglyoxal had no major toxic effect. They
said there was scope for further enhancing the drug's efficacy.

This section is about a new compound that was developed by a doctor who will probably be quite famous throughout the world within the next few years. He is already famous in Japan where he has written six books about treating cancer. He is also quite well known in Egypt where he was educated and where he does much of his work. He also works with the Department of Immunology at Drew University in Los Angeles. His name is Dr. Mamdooh Ghoneum; look for this name to become a household word soon.......
According to research reported to the American Association for Cancer Research and published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals, MGN-3 has produced complete remission in 66% of ovarian and prostate cancer patients and 33% of breast cancer patients. In breast, cervical, leukemia, multiple myeloma and prostate cancers, MGN-3 has increased the Natural Killer cell activity as much as 537% in just 2 weeks. In one study reported at the 87th annual conference of the American Association for Cancer Research in April of 1996, the NK activity continued to rise throughout the entire 6 months of the study. Dr. Ghoneum's report to the same Association in November 1995, discussing a study of breast cancer, showed that every one of the 5 subjects experienced an increase of NK activity within 2 weeks and continuing to increase during the entire 8 months of the study. At the end of the study 2 of the 5 patients were in complete remission.
MGN-3 can even go after cancers that are not affected by angiogenesis inhibitors, in other words, those cancers such as lymphatic cancer and leukemia, which are not affected by cutting off the blood supply to the cancer cells themselves. It is effective against lung cancer, which is not treatable by affecting the blood supply simply because the supply mechanism to the lungs is too vast and complex.

Could ascorbic acid have anti-cancer features?
Schlegel[50] from Tulane University has been using 1.5 grams ascorbic acid daily to prevent recurrences of cancer of the bladder. He and biochemist Pipkin have been able to demonstrate that in the presence of ascorbic acid, carcinogenic metabolites will not develop in the urine. They suggest that spontaneous tumor formation is the result of faulty tryptophan metabolism while urine is retained in the bladder. Schlegel termed ascorbic acid "An Anticancer Vitamin". Along this line Glick and Hosoda[51] reported on work by Von Numers and Pettersson that the depletion of mast cells from guinea pigs skin was due to ascorbic acid deficiency. The possibilities indicated are that vitamin C is necessary either directly or indirectly for formation of mast cells, or for their maintenance once formed or both. Ascorbic acid will control myelocytic leukemia provided 25 to 30 grams are taken orally each day.
...Ascorbic acid does have a definite influence on the rheumatic heart, especially in the acute stage [52]. I have seen children with the heart impulse so great that it raised the bed covers with each contraction recover so completely that later in life they were inducted into the services. Massive daily doses will also cure tuberculosis by removal of the organisms' polysaccharide coat. It does the same with pneumococci. I am convinced that ten or more grams a day prevent cancer of the lung in tobacco smokers. It will remove prickly heat and prevent heat stroke. Vitamin C will immediately reverse heat collapse, cramps or exhaustion if 12 to 40 gm are given intravenously. It will bring recovery to electric shock victims if sufficient amounts are administered soon after accident. Lightning victims can also be saved. I have done it. Chronic myelocytic leukemia responds dramatically to 30 or more grams daily by mouth. Pancreatitis can be cured in less three hours with 50 gm intravenously, and ten gm daily by mouth is positive insurance that it will never return. Virus pancarditis as a sequela of an adenovirus infection can be relieved in 36 hours giving 400 mg/kg body weight, intravenously, every 4 to 6 hours. I have never seen a patient that vitamin C would not benefit. And too, never send a boy to do a man's job, meaning the dose level is very important.
