Discusses whether we should be isolating vitmains in supplement form as a preventative measure.

Any thoughts, Dr Stoll?

Thanks, UK.

This is an example of the futility of the continued "reductionistic" Allopathic philosophy towards nutrition (one nutritive at a time) so far as prevention of ANYTHING is concerned. This is the philosophy of refining out one substance of a naturally occurring substance and selling that to the public as a drug that is more expensive to do this.

By by far the most effect is produced by a combination of EVERYTHING nutritive at the same time, which is far too complex for current technology to access with less than 50+ years of research. Of course, this is the basis for the Big Pharma monopoly and so will be defended to the death.

Hope this helps.

Walt

sonia, oh that's a shame. You should get a home computer, you miss out on so much!

Here is the description of the podcast from the website, I've linked up the references for you too:

"This week on Fitness Rocks I review two recent studies from the Journal of the American Medical Association about the role of antioxidant vitamin supplements in cancer prevention. The studies looked at vitamin E and C and selenium.

References:

Selenium and Vitamin E for Prostate Cancer Prevention

Vitamin C and Vitamin E for Prostate Cancer Prevention and Other Cancers

Editorial in JAMA

To sum up, the podcast reviews these studies and concludes that "the benefits of a healthy diet based on whole foods and high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans comes from the interaction of literally thousands of nutrients found in such a diverse diet, and not from isolated nutrients. The idea that we can take a single nutrient out of a food, like vitamin C out of an orange, concentrate it in a pill, and give it in abnormally high doses and expect health benefits appears to be fundamentally flawed. Good health comes from the combination of a healthy diet based largely on plants, regular exercice, not smoking and maintaining a healthy weight... and there is no miracle pill that is going to reverse a lifetime of bad habits."

Dr Ladner does talk about medical problems such as anaemia where supplemetation of B12 might be appropriate, but this is a therapeutic, not preventative course of action.

in my quest for solutions to my problems from my chemical injury, I tried many things, and some worked miracles. Zinc was one that would reduce severely disabling pain from physical activity, to almost nothing, that would last for many days, and even though I knew it would help, it would take a few days, before I could think clearly enough, and able to function to take it, that's how wiped out I was. When other things like MSM made it not needed, I Only tried zinc to see if it might help a different problem. Telling a friend, he told me he took zinc daily, because it was good and protective for the prostate. I told him I wouldn't take Anything, unless it solved a problem, though I would be trying to find out why I had the problem. I have read that taking zinc is Bad for the prostate now. IF I needed it to help another problem, I would take the risk, if I decided it was worth it. Too many things, that are one day Said to be good OR bad, get turned around to be the opposite. It's one thing to have a problem, and treat it, and do other damage, but to cause damage because of a belief that you were doing something good, would Really be depressing...

This is an excellent choice of post from ukchris.

Walt, I agree with you. However, I thought you take a lot of isolated supplements, or did I get that wrong?

I actually think a multi is useless too - simply because there are, as the trial text says, literally thousands of nutrients all working together in our food - some of which it is highly likely we have not yet even identified.

Thanks, Sonia.

Obviously, to me, the ideal source of micronutrients is a WFD for a lifetime. The next is something like the GOL supplement we have discussed previously on this BB. The pharmacological dosages of individual nutrients take a lifetime to figure out for the individual person and can be of help--for example: the esterified vitamin C, to tolerance, at the first sign of a viral infection.

Hope this helps.

Walt
