I have been taking 1,500 mg of L-Lysine for treatment of recurring canker sores for over 2 years with excellent success. I have had recurring canker sores for the past 25 years.
I started with 500 mg of L-Lysine but it wasn't a large enough dose and finally settled on 1 tablet with light meals (breakfast) and 2 tablets with larger meals (supper). I usually skip lunch. I take the L-Lysine following the meal.
It appears they help to nutralize the L-arginine from certain foods and help to balance the body Ph. I have also cut down my intake of problem foods that cause flare ups such as: chocolate, almonds, most fruits, fruit juices and vegetables (especially acetic ones), wintergreen (toothpastes, mouthwashes, gum and candy), vitamin C and aspirin. Most acidic and acetic foods and medicines. The L-Lysine allows me to eat some of the "problem" foods without incident.
I have found more of an issue with salicylate occuring in foods and medicines being a problem than I have with SLS sodium lauryl sulfate. Salicylate occurs naturally in wintergreen and is "added" to many toothpastes.
I have been working on this for over 10 years. I also tried immune system therapy at an allergy lab for 2 years with no noted success.
L-Lysine is available at most drug, grocery and supplement stores.
