Bit my lip

Posted by Kurt on November 16, 1998 at 00:38:51:

Dear Dr.

I have the bad habit of, once I've bitten my lip, to bite the same spot again and again. I am assuming that this happens because the spot swells up from the first bite, making it easier to bite again. My problem is that when I've bitten the spot two or three times, it forms a quite painful sore. I have tried salt right on the sore, and salty water, but neither seem to work very well. Are there other, better solutions?

Hi Kurt,

I, too, have the same problem. Dr. Stoll suggested that I 2
#1 In the dental section of the grocery store, get a bottle of Gly-Oxide. Get the smallest bottle since it tends to go bad quickly (or lose effectiveness or something)
#2 Take a dry Q-Tip and scrape all the white covering off the canker sore (you need to press hard) till you hit a little bit of blood. It hurts, let me tell you in advance!
#3. Put a drop of Gly-Oxide on the base of the sore. Dr. Stoll said it shouldn't hurt (for me it did, and fizzed up a lot) Try to keep the Gly-Oxide there for a few minutes.
You may need to repeat this procedure. I did it three times and it went away. And as a footnote, this was the only thing that worked with me. I tried Zilactin, Ambesol, salt, salt water--even a prescription mouthwash for canker sores!!! Good luck. :)

Dear Kurt,

One of the reasons that our mouth lining is so slippery is so that this won't happen. We do not have to be conscious of our chewing since the teeth just slip right past the lining.

However, once it has, the only resolution I have found is to become very conscious of our chewing (so as to not bite that place again) until it is totally healed.

If anyone else has a solution, I would like to know about it since I have that problem right now.
