Canker Sores Contagious? I disagree.

I've been reading some of the posts on canker sores. I've had the pleasure of having them my entire life. When dating, and on into marriage have I had outbreaks... and I assure you that I have kissed many ladies while having them.

I never had anyone... and I stress anyone... who ever told me that they had caught canker sores from me. My wife, who seems to have a weaker immune system than I, has never had a canker sore a day in her life. And yes she has been kissed many times while I've had canker sores.

I believe that canker sores are not an infection. I believe that my body simply turns against itself sometimes. Almost always, if I'm brushing my teeth and injure my gums or cheeks with the brush, I'll get a canker sore. Are you trying to say that is an infection? I think not. I think our immune systems are to blame not infection. Saying that canker sores are contagious is like saying leukemia patients should be quarantined from other people.

There's got to be a better answer. I don't know what causes canker sores. I wish I did. For some reason, I just experience an outbreak that probably surpasses quite a few records. I counted about 30 canker sores in my mouth and throat this past week. I'm 33 years old and use to the pain.... But this time, I was out of work for a week. I could hardly speak and food was nearly out of the question. Nothing helped. My doctor prescribed z-pack and amoxicillian to see if that would help. (It didn't.) Even my epiglottis developed a canker sore! No one else in my family caught any canker sores though... and I don't think they ever will.

I've tried all the home remedies out there. This past week was sure a great way to test them. DGL seemed to help the pain for a few minutes. Tea was the only thing I could drink that didn't sting. A warm salt water rinse seemed to help clean them, but the when the pain came back it was just more intense. Lysine supplements seemed to have no effect. Chloroseptic sprays would deaden the pain for a few minutes, but the pain seemed worse when it came back. Hydrogen peroxide may have helped some, it's hard to tell.

About the only thing I didn't try was something called Goldenseal. I will try that next time. I am also going to switch to a different toothpaste (one without the foaming agent). I'll be keeping a diary from now on. Maybe one day I'll see the connection that everyone else has missed.

Still in pain,

Charles

Hi charles,

I'm amazed you can kiss people with canker sores! I had a mere cold sore a few weeks ago and I couldn't have done it! By the way, do you let your kissees know you have sores? I'd expect someone with a canker sore inside their mouth to let ME know so I could choose whether to kiss back!!!!

Jane :)

I agree, Charles.

By far the most important factor is LGS in all but those directly caused by trauma.

charles,You are right that canker sores are not contagious. They are brought on by stress.they are a virus that is always there ready to emerge in times of stress even when the stress is not apparent to you.I am 73 and i have been plagued with them since childhood.I have used everything.Alumn, salt,Chloroseptic,Ambusol and some i have forgotten.About twelve years ago a lady i knew became aware that i had them, and recommended L-lysine.It is obtainable in most drug stores, health food stores and even walmart.Look it up on the internet before buying to find out about it.I take one 1000 mg tablet a day.I have been canker free since taking it. Good luck, John
