I get 'em. Here is the information I am dealing with:
1)I get small white indented sores (canker sores?) in my mouth sometimes, usually near the lips, presently on one of the fleshy arches to either side of the back of the throat.
2)They are usually quite persistent (more than a week).
3) After a long period with auch a sore, I took 250mg. niacin twice a day and it was obviously improving within 1.5 days.
4)Current regimen of Golden seal root (probably <200mg; the bottle is vague) and vit. E (1200 I.U.) 3x daily; showing minimal if any improvement after 3 days.
5)They are usually fairly painful.
6)Every time I see my girlfriend (3-4 days every 3-6 months) she gets a yeast infection (watch how I bring this into the mix!)
7)Stomatitis in pigeons and the raptors which eat them shows "white plaque-like lesion in the mouth" accompanied by behaviour suggesting that eating is uncomfortable. It is caused usually by Trichomonas gallinae, but Candida spp. yeast infections cause similar symptoms in the birds.
8)My girlfriend is currently undergoing treatment and dietary modification in order to eradicate/control Candida yeast.
My question is; am I a Northern Goshawk?
Wether or not I am is probably immaterial, but I would like to know what I can do to not get these sores any more. And I am curious; what exactly is a "canker sore" caused by? Yeast, perhaps? Why does it seem (so far; I'll do more trials) to respond to niacin? ARE these things canker sores, or something else?

Hi, Laine.
Have you read the canker sore archives? Also, look at my notes about this, within the past few weeks, that are not yet archived. The search engine will find any you have missed.
Try calling Dr Ed Cutler at [toll free] (877) 718-0718 since many cases of recurrent canker sores are caused by the kind of toothpaste one uses. This is probably NOT the cause in the raptors (grin).
