Dr. Stoll - Angular Chelitis

Posted by Matt [8421.3771] on July 01, 2007 at 22:09:46:

Hi Dr. Stoll,

I seem to rememeber you telling me a while back that to get rid of angular chelitis on the corner of my lips, I should put hot compresses on it at night, and then apply some Neosporin on the area before bed. I'm going on my shoddy memory here ;)

Anyway, my corners of my lips are all inflamed again (don't know why), so I did the hot compress thing, and I put some Neosporin on, but then I thought of something. I don't think Neosporin is meant to be ingested, so is it a health risk if it got into my mouth overnight? It only has about a millimeter to go before it's in there, so dripping or licking of lips overnight is a real possibility..

Thanks for all you do.

- Matt

Matt,

I've had this before and overcome it, you need to address your nutritional deficiency.

You may be lacking B-12.

Are you a vegetarian by any chance?

Hi Chris,

Nope, I'm not a vegetarian. And ironically, one of the few supplements I currently take is 500mg of B-12 in the morning.

I have been drinking some beer the last few nights, so I'm wondering if it's possibly yeast related, like candidia or something along those lines.

Anyway, when you had it, did you ever put Neosporin on your lips?

No, but the docs gave me all kinds of anti-fungal, and anti-biotic creams. Nothing worked.

Then I took iron and b-vit supps and it went away.

I know how irritating it is. You can get a slightly dumb pain on the corners and they also aren't nice to look at.

Here are some causes I found:

Although the disease has an unknown etiology, the sores of angular cheilitis may become infected by the fungus Candida albicans (thrush), or other pathogens. Studies have linked the initial onset with nutritional deficiencies, namely vitamin B (Riboflavin B2[1] and Cyanocobalamin B12[2] ) and iron deficiency anemia[2] , which in turn may be evidence of poor diets or malnutrition (e.g. celiac disease).

So it may not just be B-12 you are lacking!

Thanks for the info. Perhaps I should be taking a multivitamin of some sort! I stopped doing that a month or so ago, so maybe I'm losing nutrients.

Yeah, but make sure the multi-vit is quality. Also, try to source nutrients from food.

Let me know how you do, it's interesting having experienced it myself.

Well I used to have it before, and it sort of just stopped happening. I would get rid of it between bouts of it by using the hot compress and the Neosporin. I'm thinking maybe where I've drank too much beer the last few nights and loaded up on food out at restaurants, my body's trying to tell me something :)

I'm going to lay off the restaurant food for a little bit and try a vitamin.

Matt.

You could ingest the whole tube and it would not hurt you--it just would not help.

Hmm, well that is good to know! I guess I'll start using it on the corners of my lips again.

I wonder why they say not to ingest it? Probably just to cover their own rear ends in possible lawsuits, I guess.

The cream temporarily worked for me but it comes back unless you get to the root issue.

The corners of my lips crack and infect with the slightest trauma/dryness. i massage a beeswax hand salve that has sweet almond oil, olive oil,vit e , comfrey root ex, rosemary oil, lavendar oil and eucalyptus oil in it it is sold just about everywhere. Look for the little round tin with a mans bearded face on it... I think his name is Burt LOL
with all the recent dental work I have had done, this has done wonders to PREVENT the cracking and infection.. I start applying it and massaging it in the day before a proceedure, and the tissues "give" more easily without tearing or cracking.
