Swollen gland------Dr. Stoll

Posted by SGL on February 08, 2001 at 17:26:04:

I posted this before but i can't find it but anyway:

I was complaining of a very sore and tender gland and right neck pain going up the back of ear and down as far as the collar bone. I was concerned and someone posted that if it continued to check it out quickly.
I noticed that my jaw was sore also and even my right side of my mouth (teeth) ached also somewhat.
It was a little bit better this morning but i decided to go to my Dentist first to make sure it wasn't an abscess or something .
Anyway------My dentist found what he called an aptous ulcer on the side of my gum. He said it's like a fever blister and since i just had been sick a couple of weeks ago this came out. He gave me some prescription which i won't use because it contains steroid i believe (anti-inflammatory). I chose to rinse with glyoxide which is a rinse with hydrogen peroxide in it. I'ld rather stay away from the steroid thing.
But anyhow---------
My point in all this is this little ulcer in my mouth can cause that much havoc to my system. I mean my whole right gland was tender sore to touch--back of my ear down to my collar bone. WOW. Any comments Dr. Stoll.

Just a couple of corrections.
It's an aphthous ulcer (spelling correct this time)
and the prescription paste he gave me is a CORTISONE cream.
Is there any problem using this cream. Or will it heal without it.
Just a few corrections to myself.

Wow! I'm glad you went in.

That sounds pretty painful..I know docs usually prescribe steroids like that for inflammation. If it hurt ME really bad, I'd take them!! The board was experiencing some problems earlier and your post was lost. Good luck and hope you feel better.

Hi, SGL.

Certainly an aphthous ulcer can cause a node to enlarge and be tender.

The best way to use the glyoxide is detailed in the archives under canker sores. The white stuff serves to protect the underlying organism from anything used topically.

I would certainly use the glyoxide correctly before using the cortisone topically. Not because it can harm you but using it without removing the white stuff it is likely to get rid of the ulcer in 2 weeks when doing nothing it will be gone in 14 days.

Let us know how you do.

Walt

I, too, suffered with one of these after having been sick for a week. What exactly is it? It's very painful and also affected my neck and gland. Dentist said they are common. Is it in the cold sore family or herpes. And what causes it?. I'ld appreciate your response.

Hi, Stace.

No one really knows what causes aphthous ulcers (canker sores). There are many theories of combinations of viruses and other organisms as causes. Clinically, people with LGS tend to have a lot more of them. Any injury to the lining of the mouth tends to have one form there.

Recently it has been found that there is something in toothpaste that greatly increases their occurance in susceptible people. Genetics determines which thing the susceptible person will get. See the archives about perioral dermatitis since the same stuff tends to cause that in susceptible people and the toothpaste to try is there.

The above in only true in recurrent cases.

Walt

Just an update.
Now I have a fever blister on my top lip. The ulcer in the mouth left. Connection. I'm tired of this.
