What am I doing wrong about canker sores. I read the archives.

Dr. Stoll,
I am so thankful for this site as I have suffered from canker sores since childhood. I am thankful for the advice on how to prevent them and all the info on the wrong toothpastes to use. I have started taking Lysine and I found gly-oxide at the local pharmacy but my sores are getting more painful. Is it supposed to hurt very badly when I put on the gly-oxide? Ihave used it twice last night and three times today and my mouth is just more sore. After all the success stories I have read in the archives, it seems as I am missing something in the treatment of these. Could you please help?
Thank you for your time,
Traci

Traci,

I've had canker sores since I was a kid, over 30 years ago. My pediatrician recommended Lactinex. It contains lactobacillus acidophilus and l. bulgaricus. I used to take it during flare-ups, but I still got sores frequently, even while avoiding coffee, chocolate, citrus.

Acidophilus by itself doesn't do the trick - for *me*, it's the l. bulgaricus that seems to be magic. Now I take Natren's Digesta-Lac (l. bulgaricus) every day, and I rarely have problems. Citrus is still a major trigger. I recommended it to a friend who's had canker sores for years and it's the first thing that's been of major help to her. She still gets them occasionally too, but not nearly as often or as bad. I find that the ~$30 4.5 oz bottle lasts me about 6-8 weeks.

Michelle

I didn't like using it because I figured it was disturbing the flora balance in my mouth. I started increasing my probiotics anytime a canker sore started brewing. That seemed to do the trick. I also changed to a milder toothpaste and stopped eating sugar, caffeine, etc., and started eating mostly whole, or at least healthier foods.

Now I never get them on the inside of my mouth, but occasionally I feel a sore starting on the edge of my tongue. When I do feel one starting, I sprinkle on some probiotics a couple of times a day (I'm taking a powder now that contains L. plantarum and L. salivarius) and let it sit and dissolve for a few minutes.

They do seem to crop up just before my menstrual cycle, and mostly in places where my teeth are kinda sharp and rub against my tongue. I also had the dentist file down a couple of rough edges on two teeth a few years ago. That was when I still got canker sores on my tongue, right where the teeth were touching. It helped a lot.

Have you tried rinsing your mouth for half a min., or so, every night with Hydrogen Peroxide, diluted with just a bit of water? Of course, don't swallow it.

Hi, Tracy.

Once with the glyoxide (applied correctly) is usually enough. Personally, I have never had to use it more than twice.

It does hurt, applied correctly. You are using it too often.

I would NEVER recommend that anyone use hydrogen peroxide straight unless they have discussed it with their dentist. It can be very damaging to your teeth. Check with your dentist.

I understand that peroxide should be diluted. A friend with canker sores highly recommended Peroxyl mouthwash. It seems to help me but I'm not sure. I used Gly-Oxide many years ago, maybe I should try it again? I remember it helped but that it hurt a lot, that's probably why I stopped using it?

Oh yeah, this probably needs to be mentioned for anyone new to researching canker sore remedies - be sure to find a toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). Weleda and Peelu have quite a few tasty varieties w/o SLS.

Even with avoiding SLS and taking probiotics (l. acidophilus & l. bulgaricus), I still seem to have a problem with citrus and chocolate - when I minimize both, I rarely have sores anymore.
