Canker Sores

Dr. Stoll,

For most of my life, I usually had one to three canker sores per year. Then about seven months ago, I had a horrific outbreak of canker sores - up to five sores for a period of three months. The sores then ceased for three months and have started up again - one to two every week. This time they have been relatively mild. I have seen both my internest and dematologist and neither could offer any sort of exlpanation or relief. Triamcinolone Acetonide was prescribed and it reduces the healing time but has not stopped the outbreaks!! Why have I all of a sudden begun having outbreaks? What is causing these outbreaks and why are they lasting so long? What can I do do stop/prevent them? Someone told me to take Lysine, and I have been doing that but to no avail. I have also be taking Zantac but that does not appear to be helping either. Any information you could provide me with would help - I am at my witts end!!

Hi, Tonia.

The lysine is not for canker sores but for herpes type 1.

The cortisone is only for temporary relief and the Zantac is the only thing that actually is targeted on the LGS cause even though even it, too, will only help temporarily.

You really have to learn how to deal with your LGS which, as you have already learned, will get worse each year till you do.

Use the glossary & archives about LGS and let us know what you learn.

Walt
