I'm 62 yrs old & have suffered from episodes of atrial fibrillation for 5 yrs. After reading your BB and Archives I wanted to have the intracellular magnesium test. The doctor said the test has been done and showed me a result on a recent blood test I had. It was a long blood test and one single line says:
CHEMISTRY
MAGNESIUM, RBC 4.0 (in range) 3.0-4.8 (range) MEQ/LITER TZ
Is this really the right intracellular magnesium test? I also had a Doctor's Data 24 hr. urine test (toxic elements & nutrients) done at same time. The doctor says the fact that the amount of magnesium in my urine is high (234 when ref range is 46-200) means that I'm absorbing all the magnesium my body needs and that low magnesium is not the cause of my atrial fib.
Do you agree? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, Peter.
Your doc has a lot to learn.
First, this is a serum magnesium test that is worthless. Next, the high magnesium in your urine could just as likely be that you were losing magnesium faster than you could absorb it as that you have plenty.
I hate it when docs think that they know it all just because they have an MD after their names. Suddenly they are omniscient without having to study anything.
Low intracellular magnesium may not have anything to do with with your problem but these tests have nothing to do with determining that.
Finally, if this were me, I would find a competent Certified Chelation physician and get tested adequately and THEN do a series of at least 2 grams of elemental magnesium IV at least a 3 times a week for 2 weeks to see what would happen to my AF. Only your own personal laboratory (how it works) can perfectly accurately determine stuff like this.
Finally, remember that SR is as important as magnesium when it comes to any cardiac dysrrhythmia. It is just that it is easier and quicker to do the magnesium than to do the SR.

OK, that's what I'll do, but I need to know something (name, description, lab, whatever) that will positively identify the correct intracellular magnesium testing procedure. I know of two chelation therapists nearby, and I could call either, but if they say "Oh, yes, of course, I know how to do the correct intracellular magnesium test," they could be just as off-base as the other doctor who assured me that he had done the correct test! They may be ignorant, BUT SO AM I, so I can't tell whether they are ignorant or competent!
One other point. Your comments above make it sound almost like you are saying go ahead and try the magnesium IV's regardless of what the intracellular magnesium testing reveals. Am I reading you correctly? If so, why shouldn't I just skip the intracellular testing and go right to the IV's? I greatly appreciate your help. --Peter B

Hi, Peter.
Meridian Valley Labs are the best in the counry for this test. Were it me, I would get their mineral panel (all intracellular) rather than just the magnesium. You can call them at (213) 859-8700 for more information. OR, to be sure that the Chelation docs are up to date, by YOUR knowing enough you can better assess how much they know.
