Dr. Stoll,
I have posted in the past about pvc's. I have started the magnesium therapy (I tested positive for a slight deficiency), and am faithfully doing the skilled relaxation. I am trying to improve that, though, so I am going to a biofeedback specialist to help me determine if I am doing it right.
My question is this:
I have read EVERYTHING in the archives, etc. on your site, and I understand that I have 2 problems; stored stress, and low magnesium. Can you please explain, though, how this stored stress affects the hypthalamus and causes pvc's? I read somewhere about aberrant signals from the hypothalamus?
I would appreciate any information you can give me to help me understand this better. I really do feel that understanding this process would help me resolve it.
Also, do you know anything about pvc's and the vagus nerve? I read that that over-stimulation of the hypothalamus can irritate the vagus nerve, which can cause pvc's.
Thank you,
Annemarie

Hi Annmarie,
Do you have acid reflux?
Do you ever get a mouthful of acid when you bend over or lie down?
That can be a source of a lot of anxiety.
The vagus nerve can be pinched as it passes through the hole in the diaphragm where it shares the space with the esophagus. Since the vagus nerve controls the heart, PVCs
can be a symptom.
A sliding hiatal hernia can allow the stomach to move upward and take up more space in the hole, putting pressure on the nerve. When you try to swallow, the pressure can increase
causing PVCs as you try to eat.
Difficulty swallowing accompanies a hiatal hernia because the perisystalic wave of swallowing is unable to grip the
bolus of food and move it along as it should, when the esophagus is not supported under tension from both ends.
I may have gone off on a tangent, but that is where your
symptoms pointed me.
Does any of this make sense to you?
Ron

Thanks, Annemarie.
You are right in that understnading has to help.
The hypothalamic cahnges due to the storage of stress-effect are transmitted directly to the heart VIA the vagus nerve. So far as is known this is not hormonal, like most total body changes stimulated by the hypothalamus when stored stress-effect is changing hypothalamic output, but neurological. The study of endorphins may yet connect heart function to brain function, bypassing the vagus, but for now the vagus is the only proven connection.
Hope this helps.

Dr. Stoll,
This explains so much! I am beginning to piece together this mystery puzzle that is my body. I am currently pregnant, and I believe that this also puts additional stress on the vagus nerve. (I very rarely had pvc's before pregnancy). Also, when I get acid reflux (again, only when pregnant) the pvc's act up more. This too, puts pressure on the vagus nerve. In addition, I have a very low serotonin level (my whole life). I am beginning to work on all of these problems, and it helps tremendously to understand a little.
By the way, do you have any suggestions for acid reflux, after almost every meal, while pregnant? I'm assuming this is due simply to the pressure the baby is putting on my intestines? I stay away from any bread products, especially whole wheat, which seem to make the acid problem worse for some reason.
Again, thank you for all of your information, and your website. It has changed my life in many ways. It hasn't always provided all of the answers, but I think that is great, too, since it has forced me to become responsible for my own health and do additional reading and learning. Thanks again!

Thanks, Annemarie.
Alleviating reflux during pregnancy is tough and your note says you understand why.
All the conventional things plus adding the trials of elimination (wheat, dairy, etc.) and GRJ can help you through this until the pregnancy is over.

Dr. Stoll,
Thanks again! That is what I thought, too. I will try the GRJ. Have a good day!
