Dr. Stoll....Now A-Fib

Posted by Donna [6.1634] on January 29, 2005 at 15:59:32:

Dr. Stoll, I wrote the board about 2 weeks ago about bracing and tingling feet. I'm a 32 year old female in good health but I've suffered with anxiety/panic attacks on and off for the past 10 years. I'm trying to use skilled relaxation, I do excercise and eat well...I do not smoke. After having a stressful day and a dinner of chinese food and a beer, 5 minutes after finishing eatting this weekend I wound up in the ER with atrial fibrilation (SVA) After 5 hours and cardioversion IV drugs my rhythm returned to normal sinus rhythm. I am now taking Lopressor twice daily. I was kept in the hospital for two day and I had an echo and a bunch of bloodwork..everything was normal. I go for a stresstest this Friday. I am seeing a cardiologist who does not have a reason yet for this episode. I told him I was completely stressed! Do you think this could be the cause? Constant bracing and release of constant adrenaline and cortisol? The episode REALLY scared me..My heartrate was 185 when I got to the ER and my heart was beatting so erractically, it felt spastic! I did not pass out but it felt awful. I'm so scared it will happen again....AND i had just weaned off of Paxil a month ago so I could possibly start trying to get pregnant in the next few months...What do you think? Is this EXTREMELY serious or something that may be able to control or may never happen again? Any words of wisdom from anyone who experienced the same thing Please let me know.

HI Donna,

I know exactly how scary that is, as I had many of those episodes in my twenties and early thirties. They never could find a reason, e xcept they would say I had like an extra wire in my heart tissue that would get set off. I am 40 now, had 2 babies, and feel pretty good. It took many years of educating myself on diet, exercise and stress release. The nutrients your body desperately needs are: take 1 tsp. Garden of Life or CArlsons cod liver oil (will halt heart arrythmias), take magnesium glycinate in little amounts daily, everybody is unique and needs a different dose, I just take like 1/4 of a pill x2 daily or whenever needed, this relaxes the muscles, get plenty of saturated fat, as the heart uses mostly saturated fats in times of stress, contrary to what the govt would like you to believe, coconut oil, butter from grassfed cows, raw cheese, raw milk are all excellent and have helped me immensely, eat yogurt or kefir daily, avoid all processed foods, most have msg in them which will trigger a heart episode big time, avoid all additves, dyes. Another words, only eat whole foods, in their natural state, and avoid most restaurant foods. I had a horrible episode in a Mexican restaurant years ago, soon after I ate, and I was drinking a beer too! Alcohol used to trigger my SVT episodes, so I no longer drink. You will have to change your lifestyle if you dont want anymore episodes and want to have healthy pregnancies. I also had to quit my challenging real estate career and now I am a writer, much less stress, also have had to force myself to do skilled relaxation, it is all worth the changes. Good luck, Juli

Hi Donna, Hi Juli

An episode after a Chinese meal?...I had soup packed with monosodium glutamate in a Chinese restaurant a few years ago (the rotters had told me their meals were MSG free) and had terrifying heart symptoms for several hours. Have you investigated that?

I've had Mexican food with MSG in it too. I don't go near Chinese food, even if they assure me there's no MSG. I can tolerate the MSG in a packet of chips, but that's about the limit.

There may well be a connection, especially if you return to normal and the cardiologists can't find anything abnormal.

Jane

Thanks Jane and Juli for your input. I wonder about the chinese...they said no MSG but I guess you never know, huh?? I hope it never happens again. it was SO SO scary and now I'm constantly listening to my heart and feeling it beat and afraid it's going to go wacko again...YIKES!

You were weaned off paxil in just a week? You probably were hiding a lot of stress under the drug induced time you were on it, even though you 'felt" like you were not and were still possibly stressed outwardly.

I too had a 180+ rate at the ER a few years ago (maybe two?) and wrote about it here; it's a wake up call to learn to cope.
Again this past year, recently actually - I had almost 2 months of palps...again, a wake-up call.

Msg causes this problem every time I consume it. I try to read labels before eating anything.

Good Luck

Hi, Donna.

This frequently happens when the basic causes are not addressed but treated symptomatically. ALL of the symptoms you have listed are caused directly by your bodymind's normal reaction to chronic stress-effect storage in the hypothalamus.

As time goes on more and more systems will begin to malfunction and your symptom list will grow and grow!

You MUST become successful with SR and practice it at least 20 minutes twice a day! If you want to stop the progression of this quickly you are going to have to be compulsive about a whole foods diet and not cheat.

Listen to Juli, Jane, Angelnear & Michele.

You can beat this but you are going to have to stop messing around with the solutions and make them your most important focus until this is over with.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
