IS this normal for kids heartbeat?

Posted by Penny [1330.4] on October 28, 2005 at 20:29:06:

Found Gramm's stethascope and BP cuff while sorting out her stuff. So Grandpa, the kids and myself were taking each others BP and after listening to each others hearts.
My 7 yr old daughters heartbeat scared the holy crap outta me.
It would take off like a rocket and then glub glub down to near nothing then just stop( 2 to 3 seconds) then it would tripple and stagger beat then take off like a rocket again(more that 130 bpm) then the rate would again decrease to only about 30 or so before it would stop again for a time and then struggle and take off like a shot again.. Grandpa who has had an irregular hearbeat for 30 years(he is 86) said her funky heartbeat has his " beat all to hell" and then he pulled me aside and told me he would feel better if I had her checked by a doctor next week sometime.. my own feelings were to head to the ER immediately, but since I am a panick driven person , I swallowed my first reaction and posted here..

Penny,

There is nothing normal about it. A person's hearbeat should be steady regardless of the rate.

I doo know that breathing, stress etc can affect heart rythem as well as rate.. but this occured both while she was standing and while sitting.. there was a period of a minute or two where her rythem was what I would consider steady and regular. but it changed to the freaky stuff without a physical action on her part.

Yes there are things that can affect the rhythm.

But for gosh sakes I wouldn't think it should race then drop to stopping and the way you were describing it, it doesn't sound normal at all.

BUT, if you were doing all the kids, etc. she could have just been excited, and a bit "stressed" but it still doesn't sound right.

Most people think they have a steady heart rate but even if you talk to a cardiologist - the healthiest teen is not going to have a true steady heartbeat.
Almost everyone has tachycardia that they can't feel - it's only those who have a weakness of sort or anxiety that are "aware" of their heart rates.... but most people would be shocked to poop if they had a cardio-net monitor on for two weeks.... (not that little three day Holster)

However, I'd get her checked if it is a heavy fluctuation; never hurts to be sure and safe.

Re: IS this normal for kids heartbeat? Sinus dysrrhythmia?

Hi, Penny.

This dysrrhythmia is likely related to her breathing and is called sinus dysrrhythmia. It is an indication of an exceptionally healthy and responsive heart and should be applauded.

See if the rate does not speed up when she inhales and slow down when she exhales.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt

Hi,

Went thru the same thing when my son was three. Very scary! But I found out it was completely fine. Listen to Walt.

Hi Penny,
My heartrate has been like that all my life. Had it checked and I was told that was normal for me. Wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hi Lana,

Yeah, I looked up sinus dysrrhythmia, and it is considered a variation of normal, what I read didn't relate it to breathing though, it said the cause is unknown...

Thanks, Lana.

The mechanism is: When one breathes in blood is sucked into the chest just like air is. This brings more blood to the heart which, if VERY responsive to demand, makes the heart speed up. When one breathes out, blood is inhibited from reaching the heart (for the same reason that air is forced out) and so a very responsive heart will slow down. Most of us do not have this healthy a heart.

Hope this helps.

Walt
