A fib & Magnesium / Potassium

Posted by Annie on June 14, 2001 at 20:54:49:

Last year I had a diagnosis of a-fib (caught on ekg), nothing helped it except some magnesium supplements I started taking. I've been on 400mg of magnesium/day every since. It's been over 6 months without a sign of fib until today. This all started the last time with dehydration and the past couple of days I've been under exertion in bad heat more than I should. I'm starting to get the bubbling stomach sensation I used to get just before the fibs started.

I've upped my magnesium to 800/day now, and am wondering if I should be adding potassium as well to ward off any problems before they start.

Hi:

I am very interested in your comments regarding A-fib, I have been on a calcium blocker for about 4 years fior the same reason.

I am curious about the bubbling sensation in your stomach!

Could you describe more fully?

I have been suffering with Gerd and I fell this contributes to A-fib!!!

last night I ate something that made me very nauseous and aggravated my gerd my pulse went up to 140 in the middle of the night. I usually have no problems at all!! I work out in a gym 3 days a week with no symptoms at all!!

Sadly enough the medication I am on contributes to GERD!!

How long have you taken magnesium??

Best of Luck

Paul

It's hard to describe the bubbling sensation without using my hands & such, but basically it's a feeling that somehow, something airlike is bubbling out of my stomach and up to my chest. Last fall when I was having a-fib alot, I would get that feeling shortly before it struck. I started taking 800mg/day (dropped down to 400mg/day after first month) and the afib finally stopped after 3 months of off/on. Episodes lasted anywhere from a few seconds to an hour. I also have GERD, and am taking protonix for that. It has really helped.

What triggered the afibs to begin with was being terribly deydraded. I was out in 95+ degree weather walking around all day long without drinking any water. I stopped when my heart started beating erratically, scared me silly, I downed 2 bottles of water and it went away. Came back a month later and then stayed for on/off for 3 months. Docs couldn't give me anything for it that didn't sound scary (I'm only 44!), so I read up on things and the magnesium sounded intriging, so I started taking it. Have taken 400mg/day ever since.

Hi, Annie.

I am amazed that you got results from such a small dose of magnesium--although it does happen.

You could increase your dosage many times without risk so why not at least double it now?

I would need to know your serum potassium before recommending a change in that since potassium is one mineral you can get into trouble with. It would be best to have your prescribing doc adjust that.

Anne:

What brand of magnesium are you taking?

ALL seem to give me gas, bloating, burning etc!!

I have tried glycinate, asparatate, orotate

Good Luck

Paul

Oxide is the only magnesium I ever use - the brand is usualy twinlab, but there are others out there. Maybe low magnesium isn't the problem in your case? Much of what I've read talks about the intricate relationship between magnesium/potassium and calcium. Perhaps one of the others is off a bit?
