I am currently a 19 y/o male. Very physically active. Eat a healthy diet, etc. It all started about a year and a half ago, December 1996. Up until that point I was smoking weed pretty much daily (sometimes several times a day) since I was 14. One day while me and my friends were smoking I began having chest pains. My heart was beating WAY TOO fast (you know right after you finish up a long jog? i had this feeling non-stop for about 2 hours). It eventually subsided and I have not done any drugs since that day.
I continued to have chest pains on and off during the following weeks. During excercise as well as during rest. Shortly after this happened I had a complete cardiac check-up. EKG, stress test, 24 monitor, etc. Cardiologist says everything is A.O.K. He said pains were probably "stiches". This is all well over a year ago.
These pains continued much less frequently over the last year. Maybe once a month. I have been in heavy fitness training the last six months or so. Weight lifting and running. Sometimes 5 miles a session. Within the last two weeks I have been getting unbearable sharp chest pains within 10 minutes of starting my running.
I have already made an appt. with the cardiologist. Now my questions =) ! What happened that day when this all started? I had smoked 100's and 100's of times before and bang! I also experimented with LSD roughly five times. No other drugs. Any ideas on what could be going on?
I am very new to the Internet. Please no preaching...... I have long since cleaned up my act. Have been on a whole foods, low-fat diet for quite some time. Am currently taking Ta'i Chi classes as well. Great site! Thanks!

Dear Jason,
Although any drugs are stresses to SOME extent, I seriously doubt that your weed was more than a triggering of an oncoming problem anyhow.
Remember, the 30 year-old guy who has a heart attack had had a big mac every day for 20 years before his body said "enough". ALL chronic conditions take many years to show up from the already known causes accumulation. When the system stops bending, & finally breaks, is when the person has symptoms.
Your dysrrhythmia is almost certainly due to a low intracellular magnesium----the most commonly missed diagnosis by this country's cardiologists. "Stitches" indeed!
Go to the link: atrial fibrillation archives
and read everything you can find about atrial fibrillation (since all dysrrhythmias have similar basic causes). You will learn how to check out your intracellular magnesium AND you will learn that the other most common cause is an overwhelming storage of stress-effect in the hypothalamus changing how your heart responds to the magnesium deficiency.
Your Tai Chi is one of the more effective ways of reversing this storage. Keep it up. The only problem with the Tai Chi is that, because of the movement, it is difficult to check your brain rhythms with biofeedback to certify that it is actually producing the "relaxation response" needed to reverse this process. Go to the FAQ page & read about skilled relaxation.
Finally, there is a reference, that was written about you, that you need in your brain AND your library. It is available in any library & bookstore--get the most recent edition: "Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer" by Dr Pelletier.
Once you have the above under your belt, if you have more questions, write again.
As you get over this, please share your experiences with the BB, Others have these same problems & you could help them not have to struggle as you are.

Walt,
I looked through all the archives. Ordered the book you have suggested, and will order your book as soon as I get a chance. Plan on making an appt with one of the Dr.'s I was referred to from the 800 # you gave me. As far as the daily magnesium I will need after the two week treatment. I founf a very interesting web site. Check it out, if you would. http://www.mgwater.com.
There is a link on the page, believe it was "Rate your bottled water". Does this sound like something I should order, and use as a daily magnesium source? Thanks!

Dr. Stoll,
I think you mis-understood my last post. My question was....do you think the magnesium enriched water (as shown on the web page) would be a good alternative to the magnesium supplements which you recommend? I called the bottling company in CA, and they will ship it out to me. Web site address is www.mgwater.com/waters.shtml.
Thanks Much!

Dear Jason,
I had no idea thazt there was so much difference between bottled waters. NOW, I am interested in the other 70+ trace minerals we all need.
To correct any magnesium problem would take MANY times the levels I see listed here. In the long run, I would consider using the ones with the highest levels. I address this problem by using mineral salt in my food.
