Dear Walt,
I have thoroughly read your archives over the past month since I have been "diagnosed" with CFIDS. I know where you stand on this issue, and it being a "fad" diagnosis. Here are some facts, I have a high titer for active EBV, and it is a reactivated infection, as I had mono yrs ago. I understand that in order for this to happen that my immune system must be burnt out, or not working properly, (due to things that I can control if I read you right), and I brought this up to my Dr. (who by the way is in his late 70's), he listened to me as I explained that I THOROUGHLY understand that I could not possibly have EBV/mono again if my immune system wasn't deficient in some way, because I HAD done PLENTY of RESEARCH on the virus and so on. I asked him to order me additional bloodwork for the following: Toxoplasmosis, Lyme's disease, Hepatitus(all),and he also ordered a liver profile, X-rays of my chest and sinuses, and after these are completed, I have an appointment with an immunologist, which is on Feb 2nd. What I am trying to do is rule out the possibility of there being another cause for my poor immunity, constant swollen glands (all on my left side and at the base of the back my skull which is the only place it is painful). Am I on the right track? What other tests would you suggest, as my Dr. is willing to listen to reason! In the mean time, I have ordered your book, am trying to cut back the sugars and other bad stuff, have ordered esterfied "c", and am on zinc, echinicea, alot of regular vitamin c, ginko biloba, and a regular multivitamin. I am getting rest, but not feeling better, just agitated from too much rest!!! Also, here is a strange question: Have you ever heard of someone having their head fall asleep??? I am a 28yr old female, and this has been happening to me since about 10 yrs old. It feels just like when your foot or leg falls asleep. It usually happens when I am lying down. I try to re-adjust my neck, even bought a neck countoured buckwheat pillow. I do have low blood pressure, always have(90/50), my hand, feet, and legs fall asleep if the slightest weight is applied to them, I am assuming it is a circulatory problem, but every dr. I have ever told has never heard of someone's head falling asleep. My entire scalp and my neck at the base of my spine is all pins and needles, and it is something I have just lived with, but now it is happening a few times a week...Any info or suggestions??? I have looked on the internet for info but have found none there either...Also , I am not over weight, barely 100/lbs, I am petite, with medium bone size, am active, and have no family history of this. Sorry for the length of this, I am really trying to cover the bases. Oh ya, 1 more thing, my strep came back negative, but my dr. was going to prescribe me an antibiotic (an aquinalone which I have a bad reaction to), I sternly, though politely refused, after telling him that he knows as well as I do that an antibiotic will do nothing for a virus, and if He cannot find a bacterial infection, the drug will be useless, he gave me a strange look, but agreed that I was absolutely right! Old habits die hard-but at least he does listen, and admit when he's wrong!
Thanks so Much~~~~~~Celena

I read your posting and was surprised because I recently experienced much the same as what you describe but only a couple of times. Felt like numbness all the way from head down face and to neck. I never mentioned it to anyone not being quite sure what was happening. I'll be watching for the response. Thanks

Crystal, mine usually wakes me up, out of a dead sleep because it can be painful, just like your foot is when it has been asleep for a long time and you try to 1st walk on it. Have you ever discussed this with a dr., and if so what were you told?

Hi, Celena.
Kudos for your standing up for yourself and for having found a doc who doesn't think he is God. He sounds like a keeper to me!
My guess is that your additionial tests wil not help you much AND that your Immunologist (being the "specialist" that he is) will not want to listen to what you know). Imagine what will change if ALL of your tests come back positive, or none of them, or one of them!? What will change so far as treatment is concerned? Probably nothing since conventional medicine has no treatment for any of these things. God does and he built it directly into our bodyminds. Release the wonderous power that Mother Nature has already given us and then step back and let her do the work.
Next, I will bet that our resident Chiropractors have seen what you describe with your "asleep head". Let's see if we can attract their attention.

Hi Celena,
I have had quite a few patients over the years who have described the same sensations. Most have responded to upper cervical adjusments. There are several nerves, particularly the posterior division of the second cervical nerve and the first cervical nerve, that will send branches to muscles at the back of the head. A dysfunction of normal spinal function in that area can put some pressure on these nerves (it doesn't take much!) and cause that "falling asleep" sensation.
I would suggest an evaluation by a chiropractor and possibly a short course of treatment before considering anything else.
Good luck,
Dr. Kim

Dr. Kim,
Thank you very much, I was beginning to think I was going to be a "deadhead"!!! Is there a sight that has more info on this, and perhaps a drawing or something to explain it more? Also, I am kind of nervous about going to a chiropractor, because my mother had a very bad experience, she claims that her neck was much worse after. I am willing to try, but I hope it is a more "gentle" approach than she had. Also I have insurance that covers partial visits if ordered by my PCP.
Thanks````Celena

Thanks, Doc Kim!
I knew you would have something to offer here. My colleagues seem to be afflicted with the following:

Celena,
Chiropractors, Cranial Osteopaths, and even I have seen this many times and KNOW what to DO about it. Why do the docs you have been seeing look so blank when you tell THEM?
That is what my last past is saying. Talk to Doc Kim.

I think it means recurrent/relapsing MS. Evidently they classify MS in 2 or 3 different ways based on certain criteria and individual patterns of the disease. Someone please enlighten me if this is not accurate.

Hi, Celena
You're right about RRMS Relapsing or Remitting. Here's an excerpt from website I located on MS:
" Officially, you will find three basic kinds of MS: the Relapsing Remitting for people who experience cycles of relapses and remissions, and primary-progressive MS for cases where patients experience long periods of exacerbations without significant remission. As 50% of those with relapsing remitting will eventually begin to suffer a gradual deterioration without relapse, a third form of MS is callled Secondary Progressive MS."

Hi Celena,
The standard "Gray's Anatomy" will show and explain how branches and twigs of the cervical nerves ennervate the cranial musculature.
I can understand your nervousousness about going to a chiropractor for the first time. Its called "fear of the unknown" and it is a healthy, protective human trait.
The reality is that chiropractic is a very safe and effective healing modality.
I love to see patients who share your fear, beause, after they have experienced what chriropractic can do for them, they become great advocates.
Chiropractic, though, is like every profession. There are some that are better than others. (I've lost count of all the bad haircuts I've had in my life) ;-)
How do you find a good one? Let me tell you my biased answer to that question. First, look in the Yellow Pages and DO NOT call the one with the most advertising. Second, ask everyone you know if they could recommmend someone. I have a personal preference to those who practice some form of Kinesiology. Ask to talk to the doc over the phone, before you make an appt. He/she should be able to talk to you (even if they have to call you back). If you feel comfortable after that phone conversation, give them a try. If they try to sell you on an extended course of treatment, ask a whole lot of questions as to why.
There are alot of great chiropractors out there. You should be able to find one.
Let me know how it goes,
Dr. Kim

Thanks for the verification and additional info. I was hoping I was not misinforming anyone. The MS site you've recommended seems as though it will be very valuable! Thank you, I'm going to check it out right now.
Sincerely,
