I am so discouraged!!! six months ago i checked my cholesterol levels and this is what it was: total 124 triglycerides 101 HDL 45 AND LDL 58. I wanted to raise my hdl so i stated exercising atleast 4-5 days a week. i have started weight training and i do cardio as well. I eat extreamly well with almost no sat fats. I have increased my consumption of good fats such as olive oil, almonds walnuts and i eat salomon atleast 3-5 times a week. Today i rechecked my cholesterol hoping to have a higher hdl and to my discouragement this is what my results were: total 117 Hdl 33!!! and LDL 84. How can this be? What can I do? I know my total is low but my low hdl shows that I am at risk for CAD. I am not a smoker, overweight or sedentary. please help me. thanks.

This could be partly genetic.
Having said that, I also have some other suggestions. Avoiding saturated fats doesn't make your diet "healthy". Without saturated fats in your diet, you CAN'T absorb omega-3 fats from the salmon that you eat so you might as well not even eat it. Saturated fat does NOT cause heart disease as it seems you believe. I'd also like to see your triglycerides a bit lower. You might be eating too many carbs in place of your saturated fats. Try increase your saturated fats, and add some garlic, and 200-300mg of Grapseed Extract. Also, your TOTAl cholesterol level is WAY TOO LOW. You need to get that level up to at LEAST 180 and preferably to 200. It has been shown that all causes of death are higher in individuals with cholsterol levels LOWER than 200. Remember, cholesterol is an antioxidant and actually PROTECTS your blood vessels. Without enough of it, you don't get that protection. Also, cholesterol is the precurser for many hormones in the body. If your cholesterol is low, so is your progesterone, estrogen, growth hormone, DHEA. These hormones INCREASE your HDL levels. Now, if you want to talk about cholesterol levels and heart disease, consider that your LDL is very low, which "supposedly" puts you at a lesser risk for heart disease so don't be so finatical about your HDL. Lastly, consider that 65% of people that get heart attacks have NORMAL cholesterol levels. What does that tell you? That heart disease is caused by something else. That something else has been identified---INFLAMMATION. If you want to REALLY acess your heart disease risk, get these tests:
1. C-reactive protein
2. Homocysteine
3. Fibrinogen
4. Lipoprotein(a)
These tests are MUCH more sensitive for heart disease than cholesterol. Anyway, I hope this helps you

Thanks for the advice i could not agree more about linking inflammation and heart disease. I do eat a diet that is low glycemic. I eat about 5 small meals a day. I exercise 4-5 days a week. I would like to increase my total cholesterol without lowering my HDL. I do feel discouraged. I dont understand why my cholesterol is so low. I eat apprx 75g of protein and 75-100 carbs a day. I weight train and cardio. Thanks for the advice.

Try eating more fat, especially by eating foods that quite rich in saturated fats, e.g. butter (real one), eggs, lard from pastured pigs, all fat from meat, coconut, etc. Fat, especially saturated fat, raises HDL.
Make sure you don't exercise too much (I can't tell you what too much is in this case) as that can cause inflammation in your body.

Those levels are ok. You want to be between 200-240 if you can be. You are very close. I wouldn't be concerned at your age. However, what you do over the next 10-20 years CAN decide weather or not you will have heart disease. Start practicing wellness now, while your cells are still young and undamaged. You will thank yourself later in life

If you are going to go to a conventional doctor, don't expect him to do much for you. Most conventional doctors FLIP when they see a cholesterol level of 200. They believe that the lower the level is, the better, This is not so. You can easily get your cholesterol levels up by eating more essential fats. Your HDL should increase with garlic, grape seed extract, green tea, and a raw egg yolk per day.

Hi, Chanti`
Cholesterol levels are among the least important risk factors for vascular problems. The most important thing about cholesterol is it's historical significance: For the first time early risk factors were considered!
If I had your levels I would be happy and foggedaboudit!
That is probably why what you did did not change the levels significantly or in the direction you expected!
Worry about something else.
Spend your time learning what the rest of the world is learning.
