Cholesterol Success story

Posted by Maggie [863.1351] on July 21, 2005 at 22:16:40:

Thought I'd post this for any of you struggling with high cholesterol. My husband has had cholesterol over 265 for the last 15 years, since college. This year, after having some problems with seborrheic dermatitis, he decided to get more serious about his health. Interestingly, he had his cholesterol tested about 6 months after working on wellness, and his most recent cholesterol numbers are 183. I don't know offhand the good and bad cholesterol numbers, but was told the good went up and the bad went down also. The drs. were amazed, and asked how he did it, since they had been pressuring Lipitor for some time now. Here are some of the things he did...he eliminated all dairy products, he took Red Yeast Rice occasionally, he took fish oil and probiotics daily, he continued running several times a week (but had been doing this for several years), he ate mostly unprocessed foods and whole foods (not strictly but overall a terrific diet)and limited any bad fats using olive oil almost exclusively, he drank 8 oz. pomegranite juice daily, and he reduced his job stress, traveling less. I find this as evidence that the body can correct itself under the right conditions. By the way, his skin is greatly proved also!

Hi Maggie,

It would be nice to know his LDL and HDL numbers.

I think the doctors are worried about their jobs.
You have proven that they are missing the boat.

Do you really think that they would suggest what your hubby has done to their other patients?

Did he also cut out refined carbs? (Bread, pasta and white flour products?)

I wonder that myself about the drs.! We do have a very open-minded dr. so possibly she would make recommendations based on his success. But really we believe his success was based not on one thing but on his overall approach to being healthy, so that would be hard to pass on, plus the average joe wouldn't do it all anyway, sadly.
He ate mostly whole wheat grain breads and pastas, only occasionally white flour or sugar. Definitely upped his vegeatable intake. A few months he also was doing an elimination diet of sorts, too, because of his skin, which forced him to eat well. Also, he did stop drinking alcohol entirely, too, although he didn't drink it often before.

Glad to hear it. EV olive oil is surely one of the best oils to consume.
Coconut oil provides valuable MCTs (medium chain triglycerides) and would be a real good thing for him to get some of also, and real butter.

Considering that high level of cholesterol doesn't mean anything, based on available scientific evidence, the change isn't necessarily for the better. [http://www.ravnskov.nu/cholesterol.htm]

Taking Red Yeast Rice is likely to be dangerous as taking statin drugs because they are synthesized using active ingredient as a starting point, and it's likely to suppress production of CoQ 10.

However, if he reduced chronic stress, his complexion improved, then maybe his cholesterol level went down for a good reason -- there's less need for it. Keep in mind that cholesterol is a part of solution that the body uses, not a problem -- just like white blood cells. (There's more of them during infection, but suppressing their production isn't sensible.)

Thanks for your input. Yes, he did find Red Yeast Rice is not a great thing necessarily, and then no longer took it, so he really only took it on average of a few times a week for a month or so. Still, we do think he must have improvement in overall health, due to the healthy changes he has made. Even his improved appearance tells that. Thanks again for your thoughts...
