Cholesterol Levels

Posted by Joanie on July 17, 2001 at 08:37:17:

I received my monthly newsletter from Dr. David Williams, and was appalled by his first article about cholesterol levels. He states that the FDA with the "guidance" of the pharmaceutical industry, has adjusted its guidelines for managing the cholesterol problem. Prior to this adjustment of about a month or two ago, it was acceptable to consume 300 mg. of cholesterol per day. That has now been lowered to 200 mg. a day. The new guidelines also say that an HDL level of less than 40 is now the unacceptable level versus 35. What does this mean? It means that doctors will now be prescribing their poison to 23 million more people than before the new guidelines. Dr. Williams also predicts that these cholesterol-lowering drugs will soon be reclassified as OTC (over the counter) due mostly to patent expiration, not because they're safer.

I guess I shouldn't be shocked at such goings on, but how in God's name can we as consumers put a stop to all of this? What's really a crime is that I no longer trust the medical establishment to take care of me if I'm sick. What happens when I develop something serious? I'm trying to prevent that from happening, but if it does happen, I will be in fear of my life if I do go to a hospital for help.

At any rate, something has to be done about the "monopoly" as Dr. Stoll calls it. But what?

I just had to share this. Any comments?

In my opinion, the answer is education.
We need to change people's attitudes from 'treating the symptoms' to 'treating the root of the problem'.
I recently learned birth control pills raise cholesterol. Yet so many allo drs prescribe them. I think alot of people are just ignorant and need to be informed.
How do we get our culture here in America to catch up and break free of the 'allopathic apathy'?
If there's a will, there's a way.
'The answer is inherent in the problem itself'.
Once people are informed, I would think they would INSIST on changes. Human nature being what it is. Can you think of anything more self-affecting than your personal health?
I resent my insurance not covering holistic care: I'd like so see a holistic dr but it's going to have to come out of my own pocket. Perhaps I should call the large corporation that provides benefits (and decides what medical options we have) and insist on such an option. Ah, but corporations are slow to listen to just me. Perhaps legislation: Patient's Bill of Rights (?) should include such wording.

Thanks Trish. Good thinking. The thing is that there are so many "informed" people out there that choose to go with the mainstream because it's comfortable. I think change will come, but it will be a gradual thing and we probably won't be around to reap the benefits. So sad.

but, I think change has already started..not to say it couldn't use a kick in the butt, so to speak. There are holistic doctors out there...I can't help but think word will get around. When a particular treatment works, and I mean really gets to the root of the problem, people are going to talk.
Health problems are costing folks money, too, not to mention misery.
The truth always comes out in the end...

Thanks, Joanie.

The conventional medical monopoly has become an economic/political animal rather than the scientific face they keep turned toward the public.

People like you & Trish are the hope of the future. The public has to rise up and say "I'm madder than hell & I ain't gonna take it any more!" to stop this travesty. That is the whole purpose of this website.

Hi Walt,

Do doctors get "kickbacks" from the pharmaceutical companies for peddling their drugs?

Hi, Joanie.

Not in cash (except in unbelievably lucrative in-office research deals) but in trips, free seminars, WONDERFUL lunches (Thanks, Sally.), $50 textbooks, clothing accessories, etc.--the same things that our congressmen would be prosecuted for. Is that kickbacks?
