Special Update from the American Holistic Health Association with items
of interest to those actively enhancing their health and well-being --
another free service from AHHA.
FEATURED NEWS ITEM
Extensive scientific research has documented the value of nutritional
supplements in the treatment and prevention of disease. It is important
that government regulations keep abreast of these findings. Therefore,
it is troubling that the organization responsible for international
trade standards, Codex Alimentarius, has contradictory positions on
this matter within its ranks.
At the 2003 session of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for
Special Dietary Uses the chair refused to allow mention of the role of
vitamins and minerals in the prevention of chronic diseases. At the
same session, however, they were distributing the booklet, "Diet,
Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Diseases," published by the
Codex parent organization, the Food and Agricultural Organization of
the United Nation's World Health Organization.
In an extraordinary move to resolve this situation, the delegation from
South Africa has submitted a proposal to be considered at the May,
2004, session of the Codex Committee on Food Labeling. You are
encouraged to review this document at
http:/ahha.org/SoAfricaProposal2004.pdf. As you watch future
developments, keep in mind that the European Union, a powerful block of
countries, is supporting the position that medicines are for prevention
and treatment of diseases whereas food supplements are not.
