CODEX UPDATE
July 4, 2004
Rome, Italy
It's Official: The Vitamin War Was Declared at CODEX Today!
Today was a bad day at Black Rock here in Rome. The US supported the
Vitamin and Mineral Guidelines and betrayed US law and you. But that's not
all that happened here in the CODEX ALIMENTARUS Commission meeting today.
No, that's not bad enough. There's a whole lot more. Here is what the
United States participated in and helped to happen in just one day (don't
let the helpful sounding names fool you):
. The dangerously elevated pesticide levels for a variety of poisonous
chemicals were ratified. A win for Big Chema!
. Hygienic Practices for Meat were ratified. A win for Big Agra
. Code of Practice to Minimize and Contain Antimicrobial Resistance
was approved. Another win for Big Agra and one for Big Pharma, too!
. Veterinary Drug Maximum Residue Limits Draft approved. Wins for Big
Pharma, Big Agra, Big Chema!
. Maximum Levels for Cadmium in Wheat Grain; Potato; Stem and Root
Vegetables; Leafy Vegetables; and, Other Vegetables was approved
. Code of Practice for the Prevention and Reduction of Aflatoxin in
Tree Nuts was adopted.
I could go on, and on, and on. And today was only the first day. But
instead of listing all of the really awful standards which were approved or
advanced to higher steps in the 8 step ratification process, let me turn
your attention to betrayal.
America has, once again, been betrayed by the people who should have been
protecting her most precious resource: her people. The US CODEX Office's US
CODEX Policy look to me like they have been sold to the highest bidders: Big
Pharma, Big Chema, Big Agra, Big Biotechna and Big Medica. These high
minded-wounding standards and codes are nothing short of the triumph of
corporate greed at your expense and mine.
Let me ask you to think about America on this sad and sorry
"End-of-Independence" Day. Our CODEX Policy is in the process of taking
America apart, illness by illness, and selling its sovereignty to the
highest bidder. Just before the lunch break, Dr. Ed. Scarbrough spoke to
the several hundred delegates and observers in the meeting room and told
them that today was our National Holiday. He explained that if he were not
working, he would be doing what other Americans do today, spending the time
with their families, cooking outdoors and, most of all, playing sports,
especially baseball. And then he threw soft base ball around the room that
said "Courtesy of the US CODEX Office, US Independence Day, July 4, 2005".
Honest! I could not make that up!
My thought was "Dr. Scarbrough, the US CODEX Manager, has just given a
present to the CODEX Delegates. What is CODEX giving to us? Poisoned
plants and animals from which to feed ourselves and the lack of adequate
nutrients with which to protect ourselves from the consequence of the
poisoning."
Independence Day. Makes me wonder:
. How did America feel on the day it was revealed that FDR knew about
the impending attack on Pearl Harbor and allowed it to happen?
. How did America feel when information began to leak out that the
9/11 attack was already in the information system and no one did anything to
stop it?
. And how does America feel today when the United States CODEX Office
and our CODEX delegation betrayed us and helped the UN CODEX ALIMENTARIUS
Commission declare war on the people of the US (and the rest of the world),
too?
Today, the US delegate (only one person speaks for each country at CODEX)
enacted the US CODEX policy and the Vitamin and Mineral Standard was
adopted. NOT ONE NATION RAISED ITS VOICE AND SAID, "MY COUNTRY OBJECTS!"
NOT ONE!
I made it my business to speak with the South African delegation before
today's meeting started. I introduced myself and proffered my card. I
explained why I was there and I asked what South Africa's position was.
Their delegate sneered at me, refused to give me his card or take mine and
said, "South Africa believes that Risk Assessment is appropriate for
nutrients because they are all toxic!" Another betrayal.
So now what do we do? American has fought a lot of wars, all of them seemed
impossible at some point, often right at the start. Remember George
Washington at Valley Forge? The American Revolution was filled with dark
moments and nearly certain defeat. But because men and women of vision and
dedication chose to continue their struggle, today we are celebrating July
4. What a fitting day for the CODEX enemy to attack! We have the means, if
we have the will, to resist and regain our health freedoms. Join me!
And if you think that our protective laws will be enough, let me suggest to
you that the forces behind CODEX are poised to swoop in and steamroller
opposition while they change those laws. That's a definite battle front in
the Vitamin Wars.
Before we left for Rome we set the offense we need to win this war in motion
(wars are not won on the defensive) with our Citizen's Petition and with out
letters to Congress urging Congressional oversight. Well, we are clearly
now at war: many, many shots have been fired by CODEX across our bow today.
Here's our combat plan. I'll tell you and then I will ask you to join me
for the sake of the life that each of you treasures, your own, your
family's, and any one you love. Now that the initial salvos have been fired
in the Vitamin Wars, I am asking you to enlist in the Health and Wellness
Army because you love health and life and you love liberty.
If you don't want to be a casualty in the CODEX Vitamin War, join up now!
We need you and your friends and family and your friends' friends because
this is a non-combatant war with unthinkable numbers of casualties if we
don't fight it well and win
How do you enlist and what are your duties?
1. Go to the 6 Easy Steps page at www.HealthFreedomUSA.org/action and
take each of the action steps and contact Congress with the click of a mouse
to tell them we are watching and they need to protect our health freedom and
our law. . One of the Six Easy Steps is to make a donation. Wars cost
money. We need money for a public relations campaign, for lobbying costs
(legal ones, not bribery), we need money to support the legal challenges
which we will bring to protect our health freedom.
We don't get our support from Big Pharma. We get it from you. A lot of
things are different in this war. In this one, you pay to fight!
2. Shout it from the rooftops! Direct everyone you communicate with to
the Natural Solutions Foundation site, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org. Most
people haven't heard the declaration of war yet. The enemy has been creeping
silently forward and now it's gained a major legal foothold. Sound the
alarm, wake the neighbors!
a. Send out your own emails asking people take action!
www.HealthFreedomUSA.org
b. Forward our blasts as widely as you can and ask every recipient to
do the same.
c. Tell your favorite radio talk show that you think we should be on
his/her show. We do several shows a week in addition to our own internet
radio program, FREE U.S./FREE US!
d. Write letters to the editor. You would be amazed how effective they
are! People really, really read them!
e. Ask health writers in local and national papers to cover the story.
f. If you see an alternative or holistic health professional, explain
how CODEX is threatening their practices. Send them to our website,
www.HealthFreedomUSA.org.
g. Visit your local health food store, organic farmer's market or
co-op, etc., etc. Tell them that their freedom to grow, buy and sell clean,
unadulterated food and high potency nutrients is under sustained attack and
tell them about CODEX, Give them the Natural Solutions Foundation
website, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org.
3. Stay informed.
a. Read the CODEX Update Blog regularly.
b. Listen to our internet radio show, FREE U.S./FREE US! every
Wednesday evening at 7-8 PM Eastern on www.FICAA.com. This week, June 6 and
next week, June 13, we will be broadcasting live from Rome to bring you the
latest details. If that time is not convenient for you, you can find us in
the archives at www.FICAA.org.
Help us win the Vitamin Wars!
Yours in health and freedom,
Rima E. Laibow, MD

Thanks Walt,
I didn't celebrate independence day. I don't believe it is anything but a broken dream and can't enjoy it.
All govt. agencies are busy stabbing americans in the back daily.
Re: Codex
"The main purposes of this Programme are protecting health of the consumers and ensuring fair trade practices in the food trade, and promoting coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international governmental and non-governmental organizations."
No surprise. The purposes of most government programmes generally are contradictory to practices. Last time I checked, pesticides were poisons and their use doesn't protect health.

Hi Dr. Stoll:
This is a dark day for freedom. When did our government publicly inform us, its citizens, of the intent to restrict free access to supplements and unadulterated foods? Never! It never did!! And they call this Democracy? It's more along the lines of a secret government operating in secret.
If it hadn't been for some dedicated individuals committed to health and freedom, we never would have known about Codex. Unfortunately, the efforts of those individuals didn't reach enough of us. It's a huge letdown. Nevertheless, we should continue getting the word out about Codex and informing those still unaware.

Hi Philly,
"It's more along the lines of a secret government operating in secret"
It's along the lines of taxation without representation, What was it again that started the American Revolution?

wasn't Hillary a sponsor of the anti-supplements legislation? Knock George when the dems are kicking and screaming in protest, but, if we've got something going on quietly, it's because the opposition party ain't opposing the issue. Are the people you voted for in Pa voting your beliefs?- I hope so.

Hillary, King George, and the rest. They all belong in the same pot. Too bad none of those in power are telling us how rotten the stew really is. Heck, how many even knew Codex was cooking something awful? Not enough, that's for sure. Now we're all destined to feast on the putrid remains of what was once our freedom to unrestricted supplements.

absolutely-I'm waiting to see if this board goes as nuts pushing Hillary in 2008 as they did Kerry in 2004. The two sides aren't much different.
Our 1994 supplements protection came from Orrin Hatch and Jesse Helms ( and they made sure we heard about the threat before the vote), and now they are mostly remembered as extremist nutcases. Will alt health dems punish Hillary for this by withholding their votes from her, or are they too much in the constituency that she can take for granted because of her other views?

sure, WTO and NAFTA were quiet;y passed by both sides. All our minimum wage legislation and OSHA and pollution legislation becomes meaningless when the jobs ust go someplace that doesn't HAVE those laws-and Americans buy Chinese products with no care for how much the worker was paid or how safe his work environment is.

Hi ANN:
At this point, it's not about Dems vs. Repubs. It's about pointing out the ones responsible for the Codex results, besides pointing out Hillary. She's one among many. Who are the other ones? Let's get their names out there. We already know where Hillary stands.

the only reason she matters more than the others is because of her political ambitions. Most pols ust worry about the voters in their own states- the people who can vote them out. A person with NATIONAL political aspirations has to be more concerned with what voters from all 50 states want. We write our own senators and congressperson if they will be continue to run in state elections, but, we can also express our opinions to people who we weren't eligible to vote for (I don't vote in NY), if they are going to be on OUR state's ballot in an upcoming election. Most of the senators and congressmen aren't interested in the opinion of voters throughout the country, just their own constituents, if that-whoever will be in the 2008 primaries for president, dem or rep, are the people ALL of us can approach.George isn't as interested in our future votes as Clinton, Edwards, and whoever will run for the republicans.
Who can you influence as a voter in Pa?-Pa pols and national pols-yes?

If one of the supplements I am taking is banned and I can't find a suitable substitute for it I estimate I have less than a week to live; I will choke to death in a matter of days and I am serious. The alternative to the supplement could indirectly lead to colon cancer but at least that would take a little longer. Another alternative is to stop eating and wait to starve to death. Thank you Codex! Mike-S

Certain supplements have greatly improved my health and eliminated a condition that would have required (according to my doctor) surgery.

Hi ANN:
Placing all our eggs in one basket by solely concentrating on Hillary Clinton isn't much of an effort on our part. Let's add Con Rice to the basket. Then let's add more, Dems & Repubs alike.
By the way, last I heard, Clinton had no interest in running for president, and neither had Rice. But, let's not go by what they said, just in case they're misleading us. Even if Rice was appointed and not voted in, she still goes in the basket. That's right, put her in there!

Hi Vince:
I was scheduled to have a breast lump surgically removed years ago. My doctor said it HAD to be removed. Since I had heard about vitamin E being good for breast lumps, I started taking 1000mg per day. When I went back for another evaluation about three weeks later (don't remember exact time), the lump had diminished enough that I was able to avoid surgery. It finally disappeared with continued use of vitamin E.
Now some doctors actually recommend vitamin E to their women patients. But back then, they didn't consider treating with vitamins. I started reading the Rodale health books back in the late 70s, along with other health publications.

I believe it will backfire on them.
If I understand correctly, CODEX once implemented (in the draconian form envisioned), will allow drug companies to corner the supplement market so as to turn it into a huge profit center for themselves - or so they think. Their methods will be to 1-squash the competition, 2-reduce the supply, and 3-raise prices through the ceiling.
Are they nuts? How can you use these tactics and expect to succeed in a marketplace? Utter greed is at play here, not sound principles of marketing. It is bound to fail.
I for one will simply not buy supplements at 5x inflated prices that are not my favorite ones (which will no longer be available) and I doubt I'm alone in this. It will create a huge black market.

Alcohol was prohibited in some countries, and they had to restore access to it. So, maybe this won't last either. When this happens, people might start to rebel too much for governments to be able to keep the change.

I think this means irradiation. More use of irradiation allows more laxity in other hygienic practices.
Code of Practice to Minimize and Contain Antimicrobial Resistance
What the heck does this mean?

I think that's likely true. It will be so blatant, people won't be able to pretend it isn't happening. People can ignore stuff like genetic modification of foods because they can't see it or taste it and it doesn't affect their wallets, but decimating the supplement market is just asking for trouble.

yeah, Rice is third in line for the presidency, I think, so it's worth telling her our opinion, so she knows what it takes to get votes if she runs for something. I don't even know who likely rep people will be the the pres primary-if likely names have emerged, I've missed them-I'd love to see Michelle Malkin run, but she'll be ust 35 in 2008 and it's hard for people that young to get elected.
Don't think you can believe pols on either side when they say they won't run. i think a lot don't want to declare themselves too early and then look foolish if they find out they have no large support, so they hold back and hope some groundswell develops that they can ride to declaring.
2008 seems up for grabs-I wonder if GB3 will be our first Hispanic pres, but he's still young, too, so maybe not this time around.
Think Caroline Kennedy or Maria Shriver would have a good shot if they wanted it- they've got dignity and beauty that some of our female pols lack, and the family name sure wouldn't hurt. Wonder what Ethel's doing?

Yep. I drew a complete blank on the phrase.
Googling it, I get that it means the fight against pathogens in food-borne illnesses. They study the ecology of the microbes, do profiles on the effectiveness of antimicrobials against them (usually antibiotics), etc.

Hi Mike:
If natural digestive enzymes become unavailable, you'd have to find other means of digesting your food. Maybe you'd have to keep a steady supply of fresh papaya and pineapples.
Maybe those who work in slaughterhouses would keep certain animal extracts (glands, stomach juices) that are used in the making of natural supplements and sell them on the black market.
