While everyone is distracted on a Holiday weekend, and away on vacations, and while vitamin supplement advocates are monitoring events in Rome (CODEX meeting), legislation pending before Congress (CAFTA) would essentially make CODEX restrictions on vitamin and mineral supplements binding as US law via the CAFTA trade agreement. The Senate has already passed CAFTA, so you must contact the US House of Representatives to oppose CAFTA, in order to stop CODEX..... the National Health Federation has the right information........

WE MUST NOT ALLOW CAFTA AND CODEX TO OVERRIDE DSHEA
The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) Treaty will require the U.S., a member of the World Trade Organization, to revise our food laws and regulations based on Codex decisions. CAFTA would force harmonization of our dietary supplements and regulations to international standards, overriding the DSHEA Act of 1994.
The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) and the even-broader Free Trade Agreement of the Americas (FTAA) are both modelled after the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). These agreements are typical bureaucratic monstrosities of " managed " trade that masquerade as free trade and would expand NAFTA to include first Central America and then the rest of the Americas in an economic "union." True free trade would take a few pages of written text to enact ("eliminate these barriers to trade and these tariffs," etc.); all three of these agreements encompass thousands of pages of bureaucratic textual garbage sprinkled liberally with rules, regulations, and special-interest benefits.
Buried in the language of CAFTA is Section 6 that would require of all its members that they form a Sanitary and Phyto-Sanitary (SPS) committee for the purpose of insuring ongoing harmonization under the terms of the SPS Agreement in the World Trade Organization (WTO). You can find that text at the following website:

If you then look at Article 3 of the WTO's SPS Agreement, you will read the following words: "To harmonize sanitary and phytosanitary measures on as wide a basis as possible, Members shall base their food safety measures on international standards, guidelines or recommendations." (emphasis added) And as you all know by now, Codex sets the international standards for food safety including vitamins & minerals.
So, CAFTA, which is set for a vote in the House of Representatives when they reconvene July 11th, 2005, is another critical link by which health-freedom haters hope to bypass the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 and obligate the United States and Canada by treaty to harmonize to the harshly restrictive Codex vitamin-and-mineral standards. They cannot be allowed to succeed, and we at the NHF completely oppose these two treaties that would put a knife in the back of our health freedoms.

~Legislators have just recessed for one week, reconvening July 11, 2005.
~IMPORTANT - For House consideration, when they return, the Senate Bill 1307 ( click here to view bill ) , ratifying CAFTA, can be voted on without going to committee. It is on the House calendar and may be brought up at any time.

Some people are still blissfully unaware of what's going on with our rights to take supplements. I wonder how many board members here who take supplements have actually bothered emailing those letters from the links that have been posted. I know I have.

Thanks, PhillyLady. Frankly, I have been very disappointed at the response from others on this board, people who claim they care about their health and yet apparently won't take the time to fight for OUR right to take supplements.
I am calling several members of the House of Representatives today, including my own. I'm not sure that emails will do the job. The Senate vote was close and if I'd known about the upcoming vote, I would have called.
For everyone else on this board, EMAILS ARE BETTER THAN NO ACTION.

Yes, it is disappointing that the board members don't seem interested. Could it be that they haven't read any of posts regarding CODEX and the upcoming ban on supplements? Could it be that, although they may have read them, they don't believe it could happen here?
Even if some don't want to email, they can still write letters. Those links usually provide mailing addresses.

One of my TN reps is Bill Frist[R] Majority Leader and former MD and Lamar Alexander[R]. I had reached the point this year that I just chose not to fool around with MDs any more and now they threaten to take our right to take supplements away. :-)
If worse comes to worse we'll have to get our calcium from eggshells [I'm not sure how that would work], vitamin D from sunlight [OK for some people], magnesium and vitamin C from legumes, grains, organic fruit, etc.

That and the fact that messages posted don't usually include clear language from the legislative proposal that would indicate a serious problem. When I questioned last Walt's post, only Jan S. replied. It means to me that the vocal protesters here don't know jack and just regurgitate what they hear. I've seen plenty of cases in the alternative medicine community when people mouth off without having any substantial knowledge about what they are yacking.

Does this help? I just wrote it, and it's my understanding of CODEX: Codex Alimentarius (CODEX) is the global organization that sets the guidelines for the food codes throughout the trading countries of the world. Under those guidelines, the participating countries (including the United States) are forced to abide by specific rules regarding the food trade, and now supplements, sold to consumers.
I should mentioned too that CODEX started out innocently enough as a simple tool to ensure sanitary practices among the trading countries of the world that traded food. I believe CODEX started in Switzerland sometime in the 20th century. I don't recall the exact date, but I can find out.
It's also my understanding that CODEX has many advisors from pharmaceutical companies and from the FDA that report to them with the results of those so-called scientific studies. It's also my understanding that the alternative medicine experts are always excluded at these CODEX meetings. The information presented is always one-sided and in favor of pharmaceuticals and against alternatives.
There are alternative-medicine scientists who have requested to speak and present their studies at the CODEX meetings. Their requests were denied.
R, my explanation may not meet your "standards", but right now it's what comes to mind. I'm at work and doing this from memory. My information is at home. If you have more and better information for the board, please do let us know. Thanks.

No, it doesn't help. It's pretty much what has been circulated here. What I would like to see is quoted proposals and explanations why they are harmful. As you write this, think of what a lawyer for which you work would say in a court of law to convice a jury or judge that this proposal is bad. So far I have seen emotional appeals to action but no specific quotes from the proposals.
There was a time when I was stupid enough to blindly follow vegeterians saying that human GI tract wasn't designed to digest meat. I intend not to repeat the same mistake.

I understand your concerns. But I did post something from the CODEX website last year. I posted the page that showed the proposal for vitamin C. I no longer have that page, but it's somewhere on their website in one of the reports. From the CODEX website you'd have to click on the "Meetings and Events" tab, and from there, click on "Reports". It's in one of the Alinorm reports. Sorry, I don't remember which one and there are many.
You have a valid point in that you don't want to blindly take the word of board members a propos CODEX. But everyone is free to conduct his/her own research. There are many websites that can start you off in this process and point you to the "quoted proposals" that you are looking for. I suggest starting with CODEX (below).
Next, go to http://www.alliance-natural-health.org/ They're the European organization that's been working diligently with legal, scientific, and medical professionals to challenge in court the European Directives that unfairly governs supplements, natural remedies, etc.
Gary Null has been very vocal in these issues as well. If you've ever listened to his show, you'll know that he, along with scientists, and medical professionals have been asking to represent the holistic side of health and healing at the CODEX meetings. All their requests were denied despite the fact that they had scientific studies and documentation to back up their claims. By the way, Null can enlighten you much better than I can. Why don't you ask HIM for whatever proof you require. He's fair enough and concerned enough that he will honor your request. He suggests that those interested either call his office or write to him. I don't know why other than what I have observed in another area of interest I've been engaged in. American-born people in general just don't seem to care.
Maybe it's because we haven't had wars on our soil like the Europeans. I've noticed that the Asian immigrants for the most part are very concerned with politics and they vote. Same with immigrants from Cuba. They know what it's like to live in a country where they have no rights.
Unfortunately, too many of us take our freedoms for granted. Now we are about to lose the freedom to buy supplements. It is going to happen and most likely very soon. Walt has been warning us for years to wake up and take action.
It angers me that sooooo many people ask his advice but yet are unwilling to ACT RESPONSIBILY and do the right thing. Oh well, we will all pay a high price for this.
I've noticed that it's basically the same people on this board who post replies to the posts on Codex that I've made in the past. I really appreciate you. It's a shame we are in such a minority, that is people who truly care.

Good Lord, R. Sounds to me like your wanting to see "Proposals" is a cop-out. Sure there have been a lot of emotional posts on this subject. So what? It's a highly charged emotional issue!
Having the right to obtain supplements that those who realize the human body needs to maintain health is about to be taken away from us. I think it's fairly common knowledge that with soil depletion humans are unable to obtain adequate levels od nutrients from food sources.
Sorry, but my guess is if you really wanted to study "proposals" etc., you could. I'm sure all that stuff is on the internet. I don't have time so I sift through information presented by health freedom advocates like Walt Stoll, Bill Sardi, and Matthias Rath and run with it.

Make sure those eggshells are free-range and organic. Let's hope that organic doesn't become illegal, though.
Like you, I've also severely limited my visits to doctors, since they are unable to reverse any ailment I have.
I'm still in favor of visiting an emergency room for things such as a broken leg which would require a proper cast:-)
