I couldn't find a mention of "CODEX" in the CAFTA news item on FOX news but I did find the vote:

Thanks for the link Mike-S. How sad it is.
Now that CAFTA has passed I think Dr. Gonzalez's patients dying on the White House steps may just get their attention. Maybe the embarrassment will force the administration to amend the treaty. They certainly wouldn't do it out of compassion!

Mike-S did I see this correctly, was there only a difference of two votes? OMG to think if we'd just gotten to a few more Representatives...
I heard that Bush was on the phone last night, past his bedtime, calling and arm twisting votes for CAFTA. He's pushing some of us to the edge.

issue to be explored in things like CAFTA , NAFTA, WTO- the concept of treaties. If these things can be construed as treaties, they would need more than a simple majority to take effect.

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA)
New Report! NAFTA Chapter 11 Investor-State Cases: Lessons for the Central American Free Trade Agreement
Another Americas is Possible: The Impact of NAFTA on the U.S. Latino Community and Lessons for Future Trade Agreements
Department of Labor Certified Trade-Related Job Loss
January 1, 2004 marks the tenth anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement’s implementation. NAFTA promoters - including many of the world’s largest corporations - promised it would create hundreds of thousands of new high-wage U.S. jobs, raise living standards in the U.S., Mexico and Canada, improve environmental conditions and transform Mexico from a poor developing country into a booming new market for U.S. exports. NAFTA opponents - including labor, environmental, consumer and religious groups - argued that NAFTA would launch a race-to-the-bottom in wages, destroy hundreds of thousands of good U.S. jobs, undermine democratic control of domestic policy-making and threaten health, environmental and food safety standards.
Why such divergent views? NAFTA was a radical experiment - never before had a merger of three nations with such radically different levels of development been attempted. Plus, until NAFTA “trade” agreements only dealt with cutting tariffs and lifting quotas to set the terms of trade in goods between countries. But NAFTA contained 900 pages of one-size-fits-all rules to which each nation was required to conform all of its domestic laws - regardless of whether voters and their democratically-elected representatives had previously rejected the very same policies in Congress, state legislatures or city councils. NAFTA required limits on the safety and inspection of meat sold in our grocery stores; new patent rules that raised medicine prices; constraints on your local government’s ability to zone against sprawl or toxic industries; and elimination of preferences for spending your tax dollars on U.S.-made products or locally-grown food. In fact, calling NAFTA a “trade” agreement is misleading, NAFTA is really an investment agreement. Its core provisions grant foreign investors a remarkable set of new rights and privileges that promote relocation abroad of factories and jobs and the privatization and deregulation of essential services, such as water, energy and health care.
Remarkably, many of NAFTA’s most passionate boosters in Congress and among economists never read the agreement. They made their pie-in-the-sky promises of NAFTA benefits based on trade theory and ideological prejudice for anything with the term “free trade” attached to it. Now, ten years later, the time for conjecture and promises is over: the data are in and they clearly show the damage NAFTA has wrought for millions of people in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Thankfully, the failed NAFTA model - a watered down version of which is also contained in the World Trade Organization (WTO) - is merely one among many options. Throughout the world, people suffering with the consequences of this disastrous experiment are organizing to demand the better world we know is possible. But, we face a race against time. The same interests who got us into NAFTA are now pushing to expand it and lock in 31 more countries in Latin American and the Caribbean through the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) and five Central American countries through a Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).

Anyone remember Ross Perot?
When he was campaigning to run for President he was adamant in his views against NAFTA. One of his remarks went something like this - if NAFTA goes through there will be a great sucking sound throughout the U.S. and that will be the sound of jobs pulling away and going elsewhere.
Something like that.
If only Ross hadn't been a little unstable, or whatever it was. He was probably the brightest and one of the most honest politicians we've had for a long time.

the two party's leadership doesn't differ in the general globalization and control of people. Marx explained that democracy was simply the middle stage of a five stage progression-after democracy comes socialism, then communism, which he didn't realize then breaks down and you start all over again.
Only, with the growing health problems in the world, I don't think all these manipulative people leading both parties will survive any longer than the rest of us do-humanity is headed for extinction, very soon.

Ralph Nader also campaigned against it- he travelled the country with some right-wing guy (Pat Robertson?-someone like that_ and they appeared on tv newsbroadcasts together, warning the public about NAFTA and WTO.
Of course, when the US passes legislation for safety, environmental standards, minimum wages and all, they assume employers will just stand there and take it. But as the rules become long, contradictory and require hiring people just to fill out all the paper work it takes to comply, companies find moving to other countries to be particularly attractive,
And, of course, both Clinton and Bush have encouraged a favored trading partner status for China.

The current administration are who they are, no shock really even though it's terrible, but preventing us from voting, that's taking away our basic rights to a free society, that is petrifying.

Yes, I voted for Ross Perot.
Won't matter who holds office if the corporate-controlled news media won't cover the matter of free trade agreements adequately so that the people can register their displeasure and at least stand a chance of stopping them.
NAFTA was better publicized than CAFTA which was covered very little in mainstream news although a few anti-CAFTA TV ads did appear.
Next up for passage is the FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) - which merges all the governments in the western hemisphere.

I don't remember fascism in Marx's step, but, in explaining political systems in general, in poli sci class, I believe they said polical beliefs were kind of like an almost circular chamber- communism at one extreme, fascism at the other extreme and very little distance between them (not a big diff between Stalin and Hitler).
Laughing at the libraries?- by all means- keep the old bound copies of Reader's Digest (in college, I used to occasionally just spend an hour reading through the comedy sections of old reader's digests.

The problem is not CAFTA but the fact that the sneaky pharma/physician lobby attached the CODEX amendment to it in order to get it passed.
When this comes into law (usually within 2 years) we will have to get a prescription for any meaningful dose of vitamins, etc., while paying many times as much as they now cost.

I bet the lobby looked long and hard for an agreement or a bill that had enough other substance and contraversy associated with it that this clause would be buried or lost. The supplement issue was never really discussed in the media at all.
It's interesting that the vote was practically 50-50 though. That hurts, just a few more votes and we could have made it. Bush was up late that night making phone calls and twisting arms. Son-of-a-Bush!!!

Hi Philly,
Maybe the illuminati of the world have more control over world leaders than you think?
European amalgamation, the Chunnel, the fall of the USSR,
the Berlin Wall coming down, the Hong Kong absorbtion into China, etc could be the commercialization of the world... The first Gulf War could have been to show Iraq that they would have to join capitalism or suffer the consequences.
Could the insurgents and radical fundamentalists be trying to tell the world that they want NO PART of the consumer game? If so, the Genie is out of the Bottle and it will take a world war to put her back.
If Clinton and Daddy Bush could not stop NAFTA, why is
Baby Bush being blamed for what is happening in Iraq?
Could it be that those who really control have insisted that the Arab countries become democracies and join the
consumers of the world in buying from multinational companies? Could Bush have been told to go in and finish the job his dad stated?
Maybe the real battle is for the dollars/sheckles of the consumers all over the world.
Could Ross Perrot have stopped it? We will never know.

I assume the reason has to do with banning supplements. Why now, would be because CODEX has been working on their wording all this time (judging from the posts you've done on CODEX over the year or more. Now that they've formalized their statement, tey are trying to implement it, I would guess. But WTO was the power grab- the foundation of globalization.
ps. my congressman claims CAFTA won't affect supplements- will post his letter on the BB later. He didn't explain why section 6 was left in CAFTA or what he perceives it's purpose to be.

library sales, thrift stores, lifetime collection, stores, catalogues, ebay, half.com, garage sales, etc.
Luckily we have a lot of books in the house and in one of the other two barns that didn't flood (the water was a good inch or two away from flooding the house).
Thrift stores are great places to find books, though you have to sift through a lot of uninteresting stuff to find the good stuff. Books aren't big sellers in thrift stores-especially children's books- we got lots that looked like they had never even been opened. We had fun collecting the 26 sweet pickles books, looking in thrift stores over the months, then started collecting the values tales collections.
Friend tell me they have trouble finding stuff of interest at library sales, but I just run my hand along the titles, and it's as if the stuff I can use jumps out and yells "here I am'. I come home with several good books in each of my husband's areas of interest; books for me, and, now that the kids are old enough, I hand them each a bag and tell them to fill it with whatever they want. It's neat seeing their selections.

check it out this next christmas season- don't remember the name of the show, but there's father mouse and a smart son mouse who talks about Copernicus and tries to fix a clock and some human cartoon characters who have another nice song-Mickey Rooney is the only actor I remember, but that might help identify it in your tv guide.

Why now, would be because CODEX has been working on
their wording all this time (judging from the posts you've done on CODEX over the year or more. Now that they've
formalized their statement, tey are trying to implement it, I would guess. But WTO was the power grab- the foundation of
globalization.
Yes and yes. CAFTA refers to clauses that are in the WTO agreement.
