Flu Shot

Posted by NancyN on October 26, 2003 at 11:31:33:

Dr. Stoll,

My immune system is pretty shot and for the past 15 years or so, I usually get 3 very bad colds (flus?). It starts out with the scratchy throat, and then over a couple of days or so turns into a full blown very bad cold, where I am laid out flat for a week or two, with bad bronchitis that lingers for about 6 weeks. I am dreading the winter season for fear of dealing with this for the next 6 months.

Are these flus that I am gettng? Do you recommend flu shots in this situation? (P.S. I'm 44 y/o.)

Hi Nancy,

Have you considered rebuilding your immune system and increasing your health so that you don't get the flu, rather than relying on flu shots every year forever? Read the article, "How to be Healthy" on the home page, and then go to the glossary, other articles, and the archives for more information.

I follow the advice in the article and my health has improved immensely. I highly recommend it.

Best wishes,
Happygal (Certified Massage Therapist)

Hi, Nancy N.

Listen to Happygal.

Do you have a whole house humidifier (see the colds article on the home page)?

This is almost certainly just the way your system responds to the cold viruses.

Taking esterified vitamin C (to tolerance) is what I would do every time you feel this coming on.

Let us know how you do.

Hi Walt,

I read in your book that a home humidifier is the answer. I cannot afford to have a whole house humidifier fitted. Do you think if I bought two of the freestanding humidifiers, say one for the lounge and one for the bedrooms would do the trick or not?

Thanks.

PS. For 2 years on the trot I have caught an extremely bad cold. I know it wasnt flu because I have had flu twice only in my life and this was not flu. It went almost straight away to my chest and developed bronchitis which seemed to last for weeks and weeks and I completely lost my voice for a week. This may have been laryngitis? I was off work for 2 full weeks. So I dont want to get this again.

Thanks, Dried.

If you have read the home page article you know that you will get at least a 300% return on your money, putting in a whole house humidifier, the very first year just in savings on your heating bill. The next best thing to do would be the largest cool mist humidifier for your bedroom that you run 24 hours a day. This will not save you money on your heating bill but might be enough to keep you from having so many colds.

Besides, what is it costing you every time you are off work for 2 weeks? The REAL cost of illneee is not even the money you lose but how you feel.

Walt thanks.

I dont really understand the humidifier bit. I know I get dried up and I know I need moisture. But you say in your book that the humidifier warms the air. When I go to bed I feel I need the window open ALL night to help me. How come warmer air is better? In your book you say that the problem is that the air outside is cold and the air inside is too warm. I really need cool air in order to feel comfortable when I want to go to sleep. I know I need the moisture, but doesnt the humidifier make the air WARMER?

I really need COOL air at night to help my nasal passages.

Could anyone who has a whole house humidifier and/or a cool mist room humidifier please give me some advice about what brand(s) are good? And the approximate price range you paid? And any advantage of one over the other?

Also, if I spend the majority of time in one particular room in my house -- my bedroom where I sleep, and this is where I read, work on computer, etc. most often throughout the day, and if my door to my bedroom is usually closed for privacy (I have roommates living here) -- would it be better to have a room humidifier for just this room? Or does a whole house humidifier work even if it is located elsewhere in the house with the door usually closed? (there is a large gap under my bedroom door, so there is some air flow there) Or could I just put the whole house humidifier in my bedroom?

Any advice appreciated,

NancyN

Thanks, Dried.

You need to read that passage again--perhaps several times. You have totally misunderstood what I was saying. Humidification does NOT warm the air.

Let us know when you finally understand and, if you do not, let us know what you do learn.

Hi Dried,

There are two kinds of humidifiers available in the stores -- those that release warm vapor and those that release cool vapor. I personally like the warm air ones because I sleep in the coldest room in my house and appreciate a little extra heat. Other people prefer the cold vapor humidifiers. Buy the one you like!

Hi, NancyN.

Yes, under those circumstances you should just get a good cold mist humidifier for your room.

Let us know how you do.

NancyN.

It has been so long since I lived in a climate where a hemidifier would help (or did not have a whole house humidification system) that I have forgot the brands. I know that I used to get mine at places like Service Merchandise and Sears, though. They cost less than $30 and held about 2 gallons.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Happygal.

However, the warm misted ones traditionally put out a LOT less actual moisture and are energy wasters st the same time.
