Dr Stoll
I have often seen your recommendation for taking zinc lozenges as a cure for the common cold.
Are these lozenges supposed to be swallowed like normal pills or to be allowed to be dissolved into the mouth?
Many thanks.

The ones I have used are definitely ONLY meant to be dissolved in the mouth, so unless you have some different kind of lozenge, it should be the same. Zinc lozenges have NEVER worked for me when I had a cold, which sucks because having to indure that foul taste so frequently, you would hope it works. But I hope it works for you. Best of luck.

Even the flavored ones that I have tried taste foul. Are yours palatable.

I got some great tasting ones made by FoodScience of Vermont. Each lozenge has 23 mg of zinc. They have 1 gram of sugars per lozenge also.

The Zinc lozenges t hat I have used while I have had colds haven't done anything to shorten the duration. At least that I can tell. They are never any shorter than when I didn't use them. How have you determined that yours work if you believe that they do?

They don't work at all for anybody.

I am using a combination of things so I can't say definitively that the zinc lozenges have shortened my current symptoms - but I believe they have.

I have heard of studies that indicated that zinc doesn'twork for this purpose, but that doesn't mean that I know for sure either way.

studies show they help a certain percentage of people with cold symptoms, not so much recovery time. A better approach is to bolster immune response before a virus takes hold. NAC has been shown to be more effective at limiting duration of flu in a large percentage of subjects, especially combined with elderberry.

Hi, Adams.
MUST not be swallowed. No one yet knows why. So far, it is the only conventionally recognized way to shorten the symoptoms of a common cold. It does work.

Hi, Paige.
In my opinion, they all taste foul. They do not work for everyone and each individual has to decide whether the taste is worth the bother.
Since wellness has prevented me from getting a cold for at least 20 years, I have never had a chance to try them except to taste one so I knew how they tasted before recommending them to patients.

As can be seen for the link below, only certain zinc compounds are beneficial for the common cold.
Whether this research is to be trusted or not I do not know, at least it gives a possible explanation why some people see results in relieving their symptoms, while others do not.
