What can be done for muscle spasms & pain associated with a cold?

Posted by Sue Breeding on February 21, 1999 at 16:35:07:

Dr. Stoll, all,

With this cold I wake up with muscle spasms down my legs into my arches. One morning I had a bad charleyhorse in my right calf, and it still hurts some. Is this just pain associated with this particular cold virus? Or is there something I can take that will help?

Thanks,

Sue Breeding

Hi, Sue.

These muscle things are a VERY common symptom of a "viremia" and ANY viral infection can become a viremia (viruses running rampant in the bloodstream).

The best thing that I do is to attack the viruses. The best thing that works for me is to immediately take at least 10 grams of esterified vitamin C twice a day. Don't be afraid to take double that. Within 12 hours of the viremia being gone, you could cut the dose in half until the "cold" is gone.

Hot tub soaks, solid doses of ibuprophen (or the like), a good, deep, total-body, therapeutic massage, etc. would also help. Even a couple of glasses of wine would help the symptoms.

Good Luck. Walt

Thanks for the information about "viremia"

Dear Walt,

Thanks for relieving my mind about the cause of the spasms. I had never heard of "viremia" before. Is there any reason for that occurring with this cold?

Actually, the symptoms are starting to disappear and the cold is almost gone after four days. I would just like to know if there's anything I can do to prevent "viremia" from occurring again. The symptoms were pretty miserable for a couple of days.

Thanks,

Sue Breeding

Dear Sue,

A viremia occurs only when your general level of immunity allows it. That means the more you practice "wellness" the less likely it will happen.

Walt
