Child constipation

Posted by CW on January 28, 2003 at 02:58:17:

My daugther is 3 1/2 years old and has a constipation problem pretty much from birth ( she was breach born).

Generally she goes every couple of days but some of these can be very large adult size stools. She doesn't try to hold them in, although she goes through a lot of pain to get them out. Sometimes with assistance from us. She appears to have very little warning of when see needs to go.

Her diet is good with lots of fibre.

We have taken her to a specialist whom has said that she may have a small area in her intestines where the musles are not working, thus creating a blockage which backs up until there is enough to push it along. Could this be correct. The DR recommended metamusil and refered us to a pediatrician. What to do you think. I have read your articile on MO and will start her on it straight away.

Hi, CW.

Some people just need a lot more fiber than they can get from diet. You just have to increase her fiber until you begin to see at least 2 soft stools a day. The MO will make what she has been passing easier to pass.

IF she was bottle fed (even partially) this could be a dairy hypersensitivity. In that case, totally eliminating dairy (read all lables) for a few weeks would tell you that answer.

Let us know what you learn and how she does.

Walt

Dr. Stoll.
There is alot of medical literature and evidence that mineral oil causes tumours and has many other side effects. It is derived from petroleum. Even the warning label says do not give to children. I am shocked you tell people to use this. If you want the supporting literature; I can provide it to you. Please advise asap.

Kind Thanks,
Becky

My daughter babysits for a little girl who is 3. She has the same type of problem. We have found that when she gets her metimusel (sp) regularly she has more frequent bowel movements. My sister has a 4 year old little girl that is growing out of the same problem. She will sprinkle the fiber on cinnamon toast, in oatmeal ect...Instead of mixing it in a glass. You must be consistant, and a good balanced diet....watch the diary products and keep the vegetables going....Good luck!

Thanks, Becky.

I would love to see these articles. Theoretically, mineral oil is inert and passes though the intestinal tract with no effect other than lubrication.

Namaste`

Walt
