children's stool/fear of potty training

I have a 3 yr. old boy. He has been trainded for over a year now for urination, but will not sit on the potty for a bowel movement. He tells me it is difficult. I've asked the doctors & nothing physically is wrong. He feels it coming out, asks to be alone & pushes it out & maked it in his pants. I notice the stool is not hard like in constipation, he does go everyday, but it loks very large & wide--very wide for his little anus. I peak in on him & he has a hard time pushing, but can do it quickly & it comes out quickly & pretty soft -no hard round balls. He tells me when he sits down it is hard to push. We are very patient with him & realize natural remedies are our only hope (we've tried aloe vera in all his liquids, but that does not help the width. He wants to learn to sit on the potty & his 20 month old brother is ready to potty train & we do not want our other son to fail. Please help if you can. We love him dearly & feel bad for him. thank you so very much for responding.

Hi - I am not saying this to criticize - but I notice that almost all of the potty-training posts are from first time parents or, parents who are sharing about their eldest child - or, comparing children and potty training habits.
I know you will get a lot of responses - and very good things to try - so please rest assured on that. In fact, if you just hit the archives, you'll see an abundance of information.
My question to you and others, and Walt, is this: Is it possible that the anxiety of the PARENT is carried to the child? If the parent is not getting upset, peeking, asking to push and so on, wouldn't the child eventually just WANT to use the potty when they are ready? I took a really relaxed approach with my children, and other parents like me have the same results - no stress for parent or child! I know in this day and age, the preschools want potty trained children for the most part, and that may be one major stress - if you are going the preschool route. But honestly, if the kid is not constipated per say, really just not "ready" - then the obvious answer is "just because the parents want them trained doesn't mean it's meant to be" just yet... is it possible, or is this hypothesis off base? I feel that just like with reading and other things, such as skipping, speaking and so on - there is a "WINDOW" that children are ready ...this just may not be his window..

Just a comment, I find it odd that the recommended "window" in the 50's was 6 to 12 months. This poop problem did not seem to be as much of a problem back then. Any other people who were parents in this time feel free to respond. Maybe once the window has passed is where the problem lies. This whole waiting longer seems like a marketing ploy promoted by the diaper industry (and brainwashing the medical industry while they are at it with their "studies") to increase their revenues.

If my theory is right, and the window has passed for your son, you will just have to be patient, (to original poster). No one goes to college in diapers! :) There are a lot of people on this board who will give you some constructive advice soon.

1. I think "relax" IS constructive and 2. I did not mean to discount the post at all - just that it is true, that many new mothers overworry about issues such as when the child is potty trained - and I had no idea also, that the 50's "window" was 6-12 months, which is neither here nor there...because this is 2003...
I did not mean to be harsh - the written word comes out more blunt or harsh - I'm simply stating that many times "it happens when it happens" unless of course, the child is crying, not going at all, bleeding rectally and so on. Even the last post said, "they won't go to college in diapers" which is basically a lighter approach to what I stated - confirmed!

Thanks, Michele.

ABSOLUTELY!

I hope I have said this as many ways as I could think of over the years.

Namaste`

...was caused by a lack of fluids. We hadn't even begun potty training when we figured out he had encopresis.
