Stool Withholding problem

Posted by JD on June 25, 2003 at 08:10:21:

Dr. Stoll,

My son is 2 3/4 years old and is having a stool withholding problem. I've read your article on the subject and was amazed. I went out and bought the mineral oil and metamucil and started to administer the mineral oil last night. I've tried mineral oil alone and colace but that didn't work. My doctor did prescribe the colace, after he developed fissures, but wasn't much help outside of that. My one concern is that I've been working on potty training with him. He showed signs of readiness early, but I never forced him, just let him go at his own pace. Maybe that's what caused this problem. In any event, should I discontinue the potty. I was thinking of putting it away until we get this under control, and then trying again. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Dr. Stoll is going on vacation tomorrow, so the board will be shut down. Just in case, here is some of the deal.

I have been going through this too. My doc told me to stop training until my daughter is regular for a few months, then start it up again.

Dr Stoll always repeats that the mineral oil won't work without the fiber, and to follow the article exactly. So keep it handy!

I went to a Pediatric Gastroenterologist. Sometimes there could be something wrong physically, but it is usually just the child willfully holding the stool. Sometimes rewards work too in that regard.

Hope this helps.

Also ultimately, we had to go to Miralax. That was like the last resort. And she was even able to hold that for a while. But even Dr Stoll said in previous posts, that mine is a stubborn child, so maybe that is why our doctor urged us to consider the Miralax. Maybe I caved by not going natural, I do not know. It has been going well for about a month now.

My nephew had a bad problem with constipation and had to do the things you are doing now. The doc did say to be careful though because they can be constipated for so long..they end up with nerve damage in the rectum. So, they don't feel the urge when they have to go and then the body just expells without warning. This can be extremely embarrassing for a child. So just keep that in mind. :)

Katie.

The "I'M scared." situation is explained in the reference about it in the constipation archives. I think it's date would have been within the past 6 months.

Did the doctor say that the nerve damage was permanent? I thought that it wasn't nerve damage, that it was a condition of having the colon getting so stretched out that the child can't feel the sensations of having to go. That is a temporary thing that gets resolved after becoming regular and the colon returns to its original shape. The nerve damage the doctor mentioned sounds so much more serious and permanent. ARe you sure that's what he meant?

Well, it's been two weeks since I've implemented the plan to my son and it's working!!!!!!!!!! He's going at least once a day, most of the times 2 times a day. He's not withholding, crying or anything like that. I can't tell you what a relief it has been. Dr. Stoll, my question is how much metamucil does he need a day. I atleast give him one glass a day, sometimes two. I don't want to mess anything up. And also, what should I do about potty training. In my previous email I mentioned that we had just started when the whole problem began. I'm not sure if I should try or wait until the withholding problem is completely gone. Thanks so much for all your article and help. It saved me.

Thanks, JD.

To get results this quickly you must be giving the right dose. As you can see by the protocol the "right dose" is highly individual. Keep up what is working for a few months and then gradually reduce the dosage while persisting in a high fiber diet.

Let us know when this is over how you both are faring.

Sorry JD,

I forgot about your "potty training" question. My suggestion would be to proceed as though nothing untoward is happening.
