My 4 yr old son has been treating for Stool holding for about 9 mons. As suggested in your articles and on the BB we are keeping the stool soft enough so that he cannot hold it. Now it just seems that he just doesn't want to do the poop in the potty, but in his pants. (very frustrating!)
A friend suggested having chiropractic adjustments and this may help.
I had my child adjusted by my own chiropractor who said that he had a misallignment in his neck -- probably from birth and he was very knoted in the lower lumbar region that affects the bowel nerves.
I have not seen any changes yet, but wanted your opinion on chiropractic treatment as it relates to stool holding.

Hi, Christie.
I am not a good enough expert in Chiropractic to advise you. I seriously doubt that this is a structural problem!
This is one stubborn kid! He is relishing the attention this is getting him. Unfortunately he is still a little young for you to resolve that part of the problem by giving all the responsibility for the messes to him. This will work at about age 5. In the constipation archives is a reference about a book about this problem that focuses on "fear of losing a part of himself down the toilet" see if you can find it.
A very effective way to deal with this at this age is exactly how one trains a dog. Many rewards for unrelated desirable behavior and total withdrawal of attention when he messes. It will not hurt him to live with his mess for a while. Eventually he will decide that there are less onerous ways to get attention. When you do this you will find him insisting upon your attention when he messes. I have seen a case where the child would actually climb up on the table and push his butt in the face of the adult to get attention.
Counseling may be necessary but would have to be with a therapist familiar and experienced in this problem.
A difficult time.

Thanks, Dr. Stoll.
The adjustments really had no affect on the holding, nor on the frequency or consistency of the BM. So, I agree that (in my son's case -- or at this time) the holding is not a structural problem.
Also, Thank you for validating my feeling that he is a little young to be expected to be totally responsible for his messes. He has progressed well to being responsible for his urine. After months of total regression on the potty front, he now stays dry and is responsible for it.
I did discuss this with him calmly and he seems to have a real aversion to pooping on the potty. He seems afriad, and no amount of pushing, cajoling, punishment or positive reinforcement has helped to date. He has rarely been able to BM in the toilet for 10 months. And the advice to have him sit on the potty often or after meals is not only NEVER productive, it is emotionally negative for him.
I will focus on the his "will" and "stubbornness." Giving less attention to the messes. Thank you.

Thanks, Christie.
Have you read the book about the reason some children so greatly fear losing part of themeslves down the toilet--and what to do about it? It is in the constipation archives.

Looking for the book that covers the reason some children stool hold is fear of losing themselves down the potty. Can't seem to find it in the archive.
Thanks

Sorry, Christie.
I could not find it either in the voluminous archives although, if I had the time and read every post, I know I would find it.
Try one titled: "I Know Where my Food Goes".
