After reading your article we started giving our son Metamucil and Mineral Oil to enable him to have pain free bowel movements. At this point he had been witholding his stool for quite some time and was still refusing to use the toilet for his bm's. We started this in Januasry and we are now in October. He has been having regular bm's and having them on the toilet. He has made so much progress. However, when we try to cut back the dose of mineral oil he complains that his bm's are more difficult to pass and starts to withold. He has been using the toilet for about 3 months so we don't want to push to hard. He will be 5 at the end of October and thankfully does not start school until he is six so we have some time to get him off this sucessfully. Can you make any suggestion as to what I could give him that would make this transition easier. Thanks so much for any help. Reading that article has been a blessing for us.

Thanks, Bridgett.
I would not hesitate to continue the effective dose for a year or more from now. He must not have any reason to feel discomfort with his BM.
Let us know how he does. The biggest thing now is his fear of having pain and it will take a while for him to put that fear in his past.
