Chronic Constipation

I have been reading the archives on constipation and LGS for the past week. I have had IBS with constipation for about 8 years. I have tried a lot of things such as miralax, Vitamin B5, Vitamin C, ibsacol, triphala, magnesium, fibers, etc. I have had two colonoscopies. Both were normal except I had two polyps removed the first time. Magnesium helps but it gives me diarrhea and I never have complete BM's. Therefore, I have to have enemas every 7 - 10 days. After reading the archives, I started taking 1 1/2 T of citrucel and 1 1/2 T of metamucil twice a day. I finished with 2 T of mineral oil at bedtime. I had great results. I'm no longer taking any magnesium. This is the first protocal that has worked in years. Thank you!!! What else do I need to take? Should I take Primal Defense? If so, how much and when? I've ordered the Relaxation & Stress Workbook by Martha Davis. Do I have LGS? Do I need to take L-glutamine in the future? I was also on antidrepressants for about 7 years. I became very depressed after my Dad died. I also had generalized anxiety disorder. I started weaning myself off Lexapro in August 2003 and discontinued it in Feb. 2004. It never helped improve my IBS either. Thanks for any suggestions that you can give me Dr. Stoll. This BB is wonderful. Sharon

Hi Sharon,
What is your diet like? Have you done any detox and cleansing program? Do you drink a lot of water? These are just few questions that came to my mind. Drugs also can be very costipating and bad for your liver too, I took them for a while after the surgery and they caused both problems for me which I cleared up with the product called Ultimate Cleanse. Good luck!

Hi Sharon,

I agree with WOW, diet can play an important part in preventing constipation. Eating foods with a lot of fiber really help, such as vegetables and whole grains, plus sufficient water.

Another thing that helps is regular exercise. Walking every day helps the colon do its job.

Best wishes,
Jan

Very true the drug could have caused/exacerbated the problem. Also be aware the psyllium you are taking will also cause constipation when taken every day. I have heard to take it two days on, one day off.

I was constipated for 50 years, so I know the problem, but I was never one to drink much either. I now drink only water, 1 oz. per 2 lbs. of body weight, and don't have a problem. I take magnesium as well - if you are getting diarrhea, you are taking too much or the wrong kind (should be mag citrate or glycinate, NOT mag oxide). I'd also recommend seeing a good naturopath to help you with doing a colon cleanse, using a probiotic, etc.

If you have IBS, you might want to read Jordan Rubin's book, Restoring Your Digestive Health.

Thanks, Sharon.

First of all, you cannot have IBS with constipation unless you have had LGS for a long time. Also, have you carefully read the package insert that came with your antidepressant to see whether it can cause constipation? Your pharmacist will give you one if you have not and, if you want, you can get your public reference librarian to find the drug in the most recent PDR.

If you use an easily absorbable magnesium (archives), and titrate the dose to avoid loose stools, it will also help your symptoms until the LGS can be resolved.

Next, keep close watch on your stools since you may need a lot more fiber at times till the LGS has been resolved for at least 6 months.

You finally are pointed in the right direction but never stop learning. The L-glutamine cannot hurt and is dramatically healing for LGS in some people. You muat have dysbiosis for this to have been going on so long (see the archives for this and for probiotics). Omega 3s may also help the healing.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
