constipation and witholding

I have read many of the postings on this topic and am a mother is extremely frustrated with modern medicine and their suggestions for improving my daughter's constipation. She is 2 and a half and has been continually constipated since she was 6months...the exact time she started solids. She was breastfed until 14 months of age and was even constipated during that time. I was told I had her out in the heat too much, wasn't feeding her enough liquids, wasn't feeding her enough fiber etc. when all she was fed was homemade foods that I made sure were fiber rich. Mirolax solved the problem, but I didn't like that she was on a medication. She's tried lactulose, colace, lansoyl, senokot, all of which I was reluctant to give her, but was desperated because of her cries of pain from witholding. When she finally passes a BM, it is hard and adult sized and she ends up with a terrible rash, which compounds the problem. Desperate, two nights I ago, I searched the internet for answers and found your website. I immediately gave her the metamucil, but she didn't like it's flavour and texture and I found in the health food section of our local grocery store FIBERrific. It is made of partially hydrolized inulin ( a 100 percnet natural fiber from chicory root) and is not gritty, tasteless, and doesn't thicken when added to any drink or food. I give her one tablespoon of Lansoyl at bedtime (which is 78 percent mineral oil and also has citric acid, gelatin, red cochenille A, sugar syrup and water). It is raspberry flavoured and my daughter will take it, unlike the plain mineral oil. My question is this...Are these two combinations an okay solution to using the metamucil and mineral oil? I'm praying that they work, for when she is constipated, she becomes a different child and is cranky and miserable, unlike her usual cheer self. Can I use FIBERrific in place of the metamucil and Lansoyl in place of the mineral oil? I will let you know of the results...
Many thanks for a great website...

Sorry to suggest this, but has the doctor check her thyroid or any other factors that could contribute to that problem? Is it not unusual for a baby to be constipated even on breast milk?

my son had stools too big for his body- turned out to not be able to handle gluten- he had to stop eating wheat, oats, rye, and barley (including barley malt) for his body to work right. Can still eat brown rice and corn (like tortillas and hush puppies). Google celiac disease to learn more about this, or just take her off gluten for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference.

Hi, Kristy.

The form or kind of fiber or mineral oil are not important, the dosage IS.

At least double the dose of fiber right away and only reduce it when the stool becomes reliably soft. The main way this approach fails is by not giving enough fiber.
The only complication of too much fiber is loose stools---EXACTLY what you are trying to acomplish. Do not hesitate to use one of those laxatives until the dose of fiber is sufficient.

As this resolves, continue learning about LGS which is probably behind the whole thing.

Let us know what you learn and how she does.

Thanks for all of your helpful comments...I can't believe it, but the prescription for fiber and mineral oil is working like a charm! I've got my fingers crossed that it will continue to work. Thank you so much Dr. Stoll. I'm so grateful for a solution. I'm a little concerned about the mineral oil as I've read that it withdraws vitamins from the body. My daughter has always been fair, but she has been unusually pale for the past couple of months and she has dark circles under her eyes despite getting lots of sleep and cutting out dairy from her diet. She's on enriched rice milk, but has only been on this for a week. Any suggestions for her pale, white look?

Thanks, Kristi.

Done correctly, the witholding problem will be over in 6 months. That is not long enough for the MO to be a problem!

Have her doc's nurse prick her finger for a hematocrit reading to rule out anemia. If it is OK no worries.

pale can be another sign of celiac disease- the body doesn't absorb nutrients properly, including iron-a test for anemia is good, but, if it exists, you'll want to find the cause, and celiac is one thing to consider.
