Stool Withholding In Children

I just wanted to let anyone whose child has been suffering with constipation and stool withholding to follow Dr. Stoll's advice. My child became very constipated when our family recently moved. My son was 2 1/2 years and even though we weren't moving far and we were moving into a bigger and better home my son found the transition difficult. My husband and I spent many hours in the waiting room at our doctors office only to be hastily brushed out the door with no real explaination as to why this was happening and what we could do about it. When I read Dr. Stoll's article it made sense and three weeks later my son is doing much better. He still has the psychological fear of a painful bowel movement, but after he passes stoll he smiles and says "that didn't hurt, no my bum will feel better." As a parent I never thought I would be so happy to hear those words from my child. There is nothing worse than watching your child suffer, I am so grateful that this worked.

Thanks, Kelly.

It really IS a simple problem to resolve. It has always amazed me that few physiciansw know about it since it is easy to figure out just from our knowledge of anatomy and function of the colon.

Hi, I am a parent in England who is struggeling with a 4 year old child who refused to poo. He has been on a succession of medicines, senokat, Laxatose, suppositries, Marvocol & the only one that does work once a week Sodium Picosulphate. This problem has now been going on 18mths and he is due to start school in September, we are beside ourselves on what is the best course to take with our son. He starts seeing a Child Phyciologist next month but they have told us it may take years to sort this out, in the meantime he can soil upto 20 times per day. Are thes mineral oils etc available in the UK and if so can you please expain to us exactly what to get for our son as this web site is by far the best ray of hope we have had in a long time.
