My son is 3 years old and has been peeing on the toilet just fine. However, he will not poop on the potty. He refuses to go in his pull up claiming he is a big boy and that would be "so sad". This has resulted in some problems. He dances around the room smacking his bottom...doing whatever he can to keep from going. We finally (after him holding it for 7 days) had to resort to a suppository after prunes, apple juice, mineral oil, etc. did not do the trick.
My question is it has now been another 3 days without any movement. His pediatrician advised keeping him on the mineral oil because he would not be able to hold it. But like I said, it's been 3 days and all that comes out of him is an orangy colored liquid. I'm supposing it is just the oil with a little stool mixed in. Is it possible for him to be holding the stool and just the oil coming out?
I'd appreciate any comments!

Hi Pamella,
Please go to the "Articles on Health" link on this site, and choose "Constipation and Stool Withholding".
Also, do not pressure in any way or give attention to this behavior.
LOL about you're writing "on" instead of "in" when you wrote "has been peeing on the toilet just fine." I had to laugh because I have 2 sons and they also pee ON the toilet (and on the floor, and on the wall...)

I had read Dr. Stoll's article on Stool Withholding prior to posting my message. It contained alot of great information. However, my question still remains....Is it possible to hold on to the stool and only the mineral oil come through? Thanks!

Hi, what is coming out is the oil. Have you added the metamucil? These two things work together, and the mineral oil alone isn't enough to get things moving on out.

Hi, Pamela.
Children this age are NOT just little humans.
IF you follow the protocol on the homepage about this, it will be impossible for him to withold. For a while it will be messy but he will eventually figure out something else to get your attention since he will have his "big boy" pants so often full of it. As you may remember, this is very uncomfortable and smelly.
Neither M.O. or metamucil is a laxative so you have to wait a few days for whatever dose you are trying to have an effect (study the protocol). Enough will forse him to have movements and will be beyond his control until he figures out another attention getting device that will be less frustrating for you. Of course, he is witholding the solid and letting the M.O. pass through. That is why combining metamucil WITH the M.O. is what is needed. The solid is not solid enough to let him do this.
I am reminded of the old question (joke): "What is the smartest muscle in the body?" Ans: "The anal sphincter--What other muscle can separate gas from liquid and from solid and squeeze them out selectively?"
Let us know how you do. In the beginning do not be too quick to change him when he soils. The more uncomfortable he is the quicker he will decide it is not worth it.
You can see how others have resolved this problem in the constipation archives.
Walt

Hi, Pamela.
I thought I answered that clearly. Perhaps our notes passed in the "mail"?
