Constipation remedies, problems & questions

Posted by Wendy on February 26, 2001 at 12:30:42:

Thank you for your last message. I'll have to add that extra psyllium very gradually so that she won't experience gas, bloating, accidents, etc. - right? I must admit, more than 1 TBL a day for an 11-year-old sounds like a lot.
My big question now is the following: The practioner noticed that her intentines were swollen but not impacted - probably as a result of all the psyllium and water she's been having. She also has been having wetting accidents lately.
1) Could her increasingly massive intestines be pressing on her bladder and causing these accidents?
2) Also, could it cause decreased sensitivity in the rectum?

She's been more communicative lately so I'm learning more about what's going on in her anatomy. She has been going once a day. One day she skipped, and the next day, after waiting too long, she had a spasm and the anal opening was too tense for passage of stool. I gave her an herbal laxative (Dandelion root, Marshmallow root and Cascara Sagrada are the first 3 ingredients) and she had a good BM about an hour later.

3) Now my question is, how do we get a hyper child to learn to relax this area of her body? I think this tenseness is a major part of the problem for her.
4) Also, could corn syrup, which she's been found sensitive to, be a factor in her constipation?
5) Lastly, is the above herbal laxative safe? It's so gentle and effective and I wonder if that is a good remedy when she skips a day.
6) I guess this is lastly: since we're going to assume she has LGS and dysbiosis, what herbal remedies (brand names) should I go out and buy to restore the proper balance?

Thank you as always. I'm looking forward to your reply.

Hi, Wendy.

The infant's gut is almost the same area as an adult's so the dose for an 11 year old is exactly the same as an adult's.

Her change in urinary and bowel habits is temporary. Remember that this has been going on for many years. Her system has gotten used to how it has been. It will take about 6 months for it to re-establish it's normal (for her) pattern.

2. No.
3. Of course it is. The problem is getting her to learn a relaxation skill at her age. The ages of 11-14 are the least likely to be willing to learn anything like this. See Deborah Rozman's book about "Meditating with Children" which would be your only chance.
4. Yes, but not as much as the dairy.
5. I am not a good enough herbologist to help you there. If you can find a good Naturopath, in your area, she could help. Call (206) 298-0126 for a directory of the best.

Walt
