i have an 8 year old son who has severe disabilities, he has chronic constipation and is on regular senna and lactulose. At the moment he hasnt had a proper bm for for 5 weeks, he has had enemas which havent worked and his disability nurse has had a little look in his bottom and found it to be impacted. She manually removed what she could but theres still a lot inside he also lost some blood by what she had to do. Obviously im now frantic, what should we be doing?

What are his severe disabilities? Constipation has its root cause in altered bowel ecology (altered colon flora), inappropriate diet and chronic bracing/LGS. Plain water enemas can often times remove an impaction but cannot change the alkaline condition of his colon. Read my post below that reads: "To anyone suffering digestive problems, autoimmunes disease........long but needed". This will give you advice on how this can be corrected.
What is his diet like right now? Because of his constipation, avoid dry foods like popcorn, high meat consumption, and breads. feed him more wet foods like vegetables, legumes (like lentil soup), fruits (not bananas), and go easy on the animal foods. Substitute eggs for meat.
If he has a problem with dysbiosis (bad bacteria taking over the intestinal tract), and LGS (leaky gut syndrome) which creates the breeding ground for the bad bacteria, his inbtestinal pH will become alkaline and all the fiber in the world will not correct his problem in the long run. He should have a Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis performed. Great Smokies or Immuno Labs performs accurate testing. It shows the balance of bacteria in the colon and how his digestion is. If he has candida or some other pathogen, it will need to be treated ASAP. Once the pathogen has been eliminated, you can then begin to implant benefical bacteria DIRECTLY into his colon. Also, use "sweet dairy whey" in the enema and he can also drink it. Not now! After the pathogens are eliminated if they are indeed present. This will return his colon pH to a slightly acidic state like it should be. If he continues the high-fiber diet with appropriate proteins and fats, his condition should reverse. I am giving you a generaliziation based on what is LIKELY going on. Only testing will confirm for sure. Read that post so you understand how probiotics work in the body.
With proper colon flora present, proper colon pH, proper diet with plenty of wet, high-fiber foods, no LGS present, bowel problems are usually non-existant. You see, one or more of these things MUST be going in the wrong direction for there to be the type of bowel problems you describe. (go in the archives and look up LGS, Chronic Bracing, and SR. These are vital concepts to understand in the treatment of bowel problems).
So you know who I am, I have been posting on this board for some time now. I am not a doctor. I am someone who overcame chronic bowel problems that I suffered with for more than 5 years. I researched, studied and took lessens from great people including Dr. Stoll. Becuase of this, I have gained great knowledge in the treatment of bowel problems. I hope this information can be useful. After doing a little of your own research and taking this info to a health proffessional (and the info on that post I mentioned), come back if you have more quesions or wait until Dr. Stoll makes his way through these new posts (which is usually 48 hours or so) for his thoughts. Take care.

Lauren - phone 1-800-538-3988 and order a product called CORRECTIVE-A it cost $20.00 have him take 1 cap. the first day then 2 the second day. Keep going up in number of caps per day until he is having 2 or 3 BM per day. He MUST drink 6 to 8 - 8 oz. glasses of water each day or it won't work. These are a Herbal lax. and they will move anybody if enough is taken. They keep me from having Colon Cancer. "Good Luck" Rick

This is fine and will most likely result in a bowel movement but remember something, it is your colonic pH and colon flora that largely impacts ones chances of getting colon cancer, having constipation, or any other digestive complaint. You can increase fiber until the cows come home but you will only treating symptoms until the colonic environment is corrected.

Hi, Lauren.
This is a pretty common problem for "severely disabled" people--not just children. His doctor should have explained this to you and told you how to avoid it.
At this late point, he needs enough laxatives, (best along with large doses of fiber and mineral oil) to force many movements until they are loose. If you can get him to cooperate, a high oil retention enema will be helpful (They have kits at the drug store.) If you do not get results in a day or so, he may need hospitalization to get past this point.
THEN, his doc has to explain how to keep this from ever happening again.
Let us know how he does.

Rich - You are 100% right Sir, proper PH and getting to the ROOT of the problem is the only way to go. I was just offering a "QUICK FIX" with a product that I know will move mountains.

Pick up a book called "Acidophilus and Colon Health" by David Webster. He is a colon therapist that pioneered a technique of re-acidifiying the colon in order to have lactobacteria thrive. See, if your son is having water enemas, these may be sufficient to remove an impaction but will not reverse the alkaline tendency of his colon. This man's enema technique reverses the alkaline state and allows for normal bowel movements. Look up the book at BarnesNoble.com and see what you think.
