Hello. Our 8 week old son is constipated and can not have a movement without assistance. He has been diagnosed with reflux and they have told us to put 1 TBSP of rice cereal in his formula. We have also been told to give him prune juice with sugar water. He does not keep the juice mix down. We have taken him to see 3 pediatricians (The Pediatrician we were assigned by the hospital saw him once and was then on holidays for 4 weeks). We have resorted to Glycerine suppositories and the q-tip method to help him have a movement, which are only temporary fixes. We need some advice as we believe that there are no decent Pediatrician's here (We live in Ottawa, Canada Mike & Julie, Little Braden

Is the child breast-feeding? If not, is he on a milk-based formula? If so, that is probably the problem.

Thank you for your reply...He is not breast feeding...He is on Lactose free formula..We have tried Soy...And another product that is for infants that have digestive problems..This did not help...We have tried about 6 different formulas and nothing seems to help..

Too bad he's not breastfeeding. Would there be any way to get milk flowing from the breasts if you tried to start now? Does he take in anything else orally (food/drink), besides the formula(s)? Are you giving him crackers or anything wheat-based? If you are, you may want to check into celiac disease.
Has he really been on SIX different formulas in just 8 weeks time? I'm sure you are desperate to offer him relief, but constantly changing formulas seems like that alone may be part of the problem. When a new formula is tried, the body needs some time to adjust, don't you think? When you tried soy formula, was he also getting some cow-milk based formulas at the same time? Maybe trying to use up what was left inbetween? What I am getting at, is if this is a cow-milk sensitivity, then any trace at all of cow-milk formula would negate your trial altogether. The elimination has to be perfect. Is he gaining weight normally?
Lactose-free only helps with lactose intolerance, which is different from what I am talking about here. Casein, milk protein, is what must be avoided completely for you to know if this is the cause of the constipation. This is a common problem (cow's milk). Wheat is another very common culprit.
One thing you could do is take him to a good chiropractor who practices Applied Kinesiology. S/he can use your arm while you are touching your son, to muscle test him for allergies and sensitivities. You can find out whether milk, soy, and wheat (ect.) are problems for his system. Hope this helps, and your son begins normal eliminations soon. Find a doctor who will help you get to the bottom of this - the CAUSE, don't let them just prescribe stuff or tell you to give him laxatives every day.

Just re-read your very first message and saw that you were advised to give him rice cereal in his bottle, to help the reflux. White rice is basically a constipating food, sort of like bananas. I hope you can find a good doctor - perhaps you can find a holistic MD.

Thanks, kmd.
IF the child is sensitive enough it wouldn't matter if he were breast feeding if the MOTHER stil had dairy in HER diet.
At this age the hypersensitivity has to be pretty severe.
In answer to your question: almond milk (easy to make by soaking almonds over night in distilled water and blending them in the morning) is the first thing to try (at least 2-3 volumes of water to one volume of nuts).
If all studies to rule out things like Hirshsprung's have been done, and are negative, the next thing is to do the MO and any way to get in fiber.
Finally, I would be sure to see a Clinical Ecologist in consultation to rule out other environmental sensitivities that may be contributing (see the glossary or search engine for how to find one in Canada).
Let us know how he does.
Walt

Thank you all for the information...We will be sure to check out the things that you have advised...Like Dr. Stoll mentioned, the breast feeding only worked for a couple of days after birth, the baby was vommiting profusely...So we decided to go with formula..We have tried regular doctor's..as we mentioned in the first posting and we are very frustrated with the results..They do not want to test for anything here, it is a public funded health system so they try and cut corners anywhere possible without the patients health being the main concern. He is growing, however so is the size of his stool. He seems to be in more pain day by day...What we are considering is taking him to a specialist that may not be convered by the system..We are not sure if there any out there..In Canada...We are checking what options are available..Maybe go to the States...We will keep you posted and again thank you all!!

YOU CAN PUT him on almond milk he would get his protein from that, and you could add some fresh organic carrot juice, go to the rawfoods.com there are lots of people that could help you, but if your baby is allergic, you get adequate nourishment from this here, thatis all i can tell you
