HELP!!! MY 3.5 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WILL NOT HAVE A BOWEL MOVEMENT ON THE TOILET. SHE WILL ONLY GO IN A DIAPER IN HER ROOM. IT IS MAKING OUR LIVES CRAZY IF WE GO OUT, OR HEAVEN FORBID AWAY SHE WILL HOLD HER STOOL AND MAKE THE ENTIRE FAMILY MISERABLE. WE HAVE TRIED MINERAL OIL, & ELIMINATING CONSTIPATING FOODS. AT PRESENT WE ARE TRYING TO NOT GIVE HER A DIAPER, AND SHE IS HOLDING HER STOOL. SHE HAS BEEN POTTY TRAINED FOR URINE (DAY AND NIGHT) FOR ONE YEAR.(SELF-TRAINED BY WATCHING HER OLDER SIBLINGS)

Hi, Kristina.
Apparently you have not read the protocol for resolving this problem. It has been discussed, and applied successfully by everyone willing to learn how to do it, for years right here on this BB.
When you have read it, if you still have quesitions, write again.

(THis is the third time I've responded to this message and none of my responses have made it to the board. What is happening??!! Lately all my messages have been getting lost in cyberspace.)
Kristina, I just wanted to say that you should read Dr. Stoll's article #24 entitled "Constipation and Stool Withholding in Children." It's great that you're taking care of it now, as it must not go on for too long - take it from one who knows.
We followed the protocol set out in the article and it worked very well for my daughter. Please let us know how it works for you. Good luck!

Hi, Wendy.
Well, it worked this time. What did you do differently?
I have had no problems except when they are working on the ISP and then I get a note that says "forbidden" for a few hours at most.
Let us know if you have any more trouble and call your note to Bill's attention by putting his name in caps in the title.

Hi, Bill,
Just letting you know that a lot of my messages have gotten lost this past week, even though after I submit them I get the msg that they've been added to the message board. Some of them still make it however, though I haven't done anything different. Just though you'd like to know. Has anyone else out there had problems posting?

THANK YOU FOR THE RESPONSE, MAY 24, RE MY DAUGHTER'S STOOL HOLDING. AT PRESENT WE ARE USING METAMUCIL & MINERAL OIL , IT HAS BEEN A SUCCESS AS FAR AS CONSTIPATION GOES. THE PROBLEM IS SHE CONTINUES TO HOLD AS LONG AS SHE CAN AND IS COMPLETELY BESIDE HERSELF IN DISCOMPORT BECAUSE OF THIS. WHEN SHE FINALLY GOES NOW IT IS IN HER UNDERWEAR. SHE STILL REFUSES TO GO ON THE TOILET UNLESS IF IT IS TO PASS URINE. SHOULD I CONTINUE TO INSIST THAT SHE NOT USE A DIAPER? SHE IS 3.5 AND WILL ONLY USE THE DIAPER AT HOME. HOLDS HER STOOL OTHER WISE.

Hi, Kristina.
It is messy but you need to increase the fiber. Just to protect yourself, you will need to go back to diapers. This is the quickest way for her to learn that poop in your pants is terribly uncomfortable and smelly.
Besides, her stools will get so runny that she will be unable to go to the pot for unrination without also passing stool. Eventually even the most stubborn kid will realize that there is no danger to passing stool in the toilet since it happens every time she passes urine AND there is no pain.
When she gets to that point, you can begin to reduce the fiber slowly. Remember, any kid this stubborn may keep it up longer because of the attention it gets her. The solution to that is to give her lots of attention when it is not in the least related to the stooling problem. Have you ever trained a dog? It is strangly similar.
Let us know how she does.
Walt
