My daugher is 7 years old and withholds her BM. The bowel retention problem started at age 2. I did not have trouble potty training her. She is not constipated!
She has been evaluated by the Yale Child Center at Yale New Haven Hospital.(1999) The finding of study was that, the parents need to get along better.
I am divorced. We have learned to get along and have made many positive changes but that still has not help our daughter stop withholding her BM.
She is under the care of a Gastronoligist,Since 1998. He had us give her Minerial oil, senokot. In the beginning it help, but it has no effect on her any longer. So she is now on MiraLax. This gives her the urge to go, but she still refuses. She soils her pants, and will sit on her foot and hold the urge back.
She can withhold forever. I have to give her a suppository, or enema for her to release.
We are all in theorpy, but I still see no positive results. I have changed councelers a few times because we showed no progress.
I am now trying Homeopathic care. I can see small results.
But She still contines to withhold!!!!!!
Can anyone help me????? I am very worried for my daughter's heath.

Hi, Janice.
At this age, this is a psychiatric problem (So long as she is not constipated!)
My best advice to you is to ignore her problem. She is old enough to clean up after herself. Make sure that there are plenty of underpants available; be sure she knows where the washcloths and towels are for cleaning herself.
She made the mess and it is up to her to take care of it. This is not a punishment! It is the main reason adults do not mess THEIR pants.
She has to change herself, clean up any mess and put the mess in the washer: start the washer; put everything in the dryer when it is washed; take the stuff from the dryer and put them back wherever they are kept.
YOU must not do any of this. You will soon find that she will soon decide that it is MUCH easier (for her) to handle her BMs just like adults do.
It will be hard for you to resolve the problem this way but, if you stick to it I will bet that the problem is over in a month. The first time you interfere with this procedure, it will take several months and the second time it will take a year.
Children, who are acting out like this, are just like chickens in the famous chicken experiment: If you take a chicken and teach it to peck a lever to get a kernal of corn, it will reliably do this, for as long as the lever is present, until it is satiated with corn. However, if you stop giving the kernal of corn, after an average of 10 pecks (no corn) it will be totally untrained again. IF, however, you give them no corn to untrain them, and THEN, on the 9th peck give them a kernal of corn, they will peck the lever forever (no corn) until their beak gets bloody and they die.
I seems that chickens cannot tell the difference between 9 and a billion. They seem to think if they just continue to peck, eventually they will get another kernal.
If you never fail in the above, this will not take long. IF,however, you just canot stand it and take care of the mess for her just once, she will continue soiling for a very long time.
If she refuses to cooperate with this, you have to deprive her of privileges until she does.
YOu MUST NOT KNOW when she has a BM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let us know how you do.
All of this is not necessary IF she is constipated. I am taking you at your word that she is not.

Hi Janice,
I just wanted to add to Dr. Stoll's response. Mineral oil and senocot are used to correct constipation, so that must have been what her doctor thought she had. Dr. Stoll has a much better remedy for this problem than the gastroenterologist (gastros always just treat symptoms and never the core problem) and it's all in the archives.
I know that it may sometimes seem like she has chronic diarrhea, but what's probably happening is that her colon is distended from chronic constipation, so she doesn't feel the sensation of having to go. Then the soft stool leaks around the hard stool - in short, encopresis. In that case, she's not doing it on purpose - believe me, I know!
I think that treating this problem (as described in article #24 under Articles on Health; click on the upper right hand corner of the first page of this website) is a cinch compared to trying to ignore it. My daughter has been on this program for 6 months and she's now regular - "going" 6 days out of 7. But she had severe intestional dysbiosis too, which we've also been treating, so I belive in finding out the reason for chronic constipation. Please don't give up. I thought we'd never see an improvement. It's an extremely common problem and can be fixed, and if it IS constipation in your case, at least you'll know just what to do. Good luck and keep posting. If it's NOT constipation, I guess it's a little more complicated. Please do keep us informed about your progress - there are others on this board who post with the same complaint.
