Aspartame vs. Sucrose

Thank you so much for your program and assistance with stool withholding. I see you recommend "sugar-free" bulk products for use with children and constipation (stool withholding). Why? I understand the idea to reduce sugar intake, but I feel more inclined to give my son natural sucrose over artificial sweetners. Are we comfortable enough with artificial sweetners to recommend they are given to children over extended periods of time (6+ months required for your program)? Please advise.

Hi, Laura.

The main reason is that the sugar takes up about 50% of the volume of the fiber and so it takes nearly twice as much for the results.

I DO believe that the sugar is dangerous for those trying to clean up their diet. However, if they are eating the disaster that is the Americal diet, the amount in sugared fiber is negligible.

Unless the child has a serious hypersensitivity to aspartame (unfortunately impossible to tell without expensive testing--which is not very reliable--or trying it out on the kid) 6 months of what is in artificially sweetened fiber is not a problem. It is the year after year exposure that is the biggest risk.

Hope this helps.

Walt

I've noticed that the amount of fiber listed on the back panel of the package is the same on both the aspartame version and the sugar version of Metamucil. According to the packages, both have the same amount of fiber, so doesn't it not matter which kind you use?

Thank you for your follow-up information. I sincerely appreciate it. According to the "Metamucil" comment, the fiber content is the same for both sugar free and regular products. Is sugar truly 50% of the volume of the fiber for this product? Interesting... I'll have to double check my labels next time. Could it be the amount required per dosage is different?

Hi, Metamucil.

Why, then, does the metamucil with sugar weigh so much more than the aspartame sweetened?

Hi, Laura.

They may have changed it but years ago it was 50-50. The sugared stuff still weighs more than the aspartame stuff so I know it is taking up some of the fiber space.

According to the package, tablespoon by tablespoon they have the same amount of fiber. So I'm a little confused! It seems that you can use the two different kinds interchangeably.

According Metamucil's website in their FAQ section, www.metamucil.com, "... Dosage amounts differ by version because of the flavorings used in each product vary by volume. Powder varieties with no sugar or low amounts of sugar have a recommended dosage of 1 teaspoon. Varieties with higher amounts of sugar have a recommended dosage of 1 tablespoon. ALL VARIETIES CONTAIN THE SAME AMOUNT OF PSYLLIUM HUSK PER DOSE - 3.4 GRAMS." So, I'm back to my first question: Which is best? Sucrose or aspartame? Natural or artificial?

Hi, Laura.

I, personally need a lot of this fiber at my age and it doesn't work the same for me.

I guess each person will have to let their body-lab tell them which works best for them.

Unless one is trying to break the sugar addiction, I do not think it makes any real difference. If one is hypersensitive to aspartame, of course............

Hope this helps.
