constipation and age of stool holding?

Dr. Stoll,

I have gone through the site and archives and could not find answers to a few questions.

My son is 6 months old. He is milk protein intolerant (had blood and mucous in diarrhea when on milk formula) and on Soy formula now. Before solids I had to add prune juice (pediatrician's advise) to his formula to keep him regular. Was told the soy formula was constipating him with no other tests done. When solids introduced prune juice was elimated. He was fine, going regularly once a day, drinking 24-32 oz per day, solids 2x daily.

Apx 2 weeks ago, I switched formula to a different brand of soy (only because the store was out of my usual formula) but I also introduced a 3rd feeding of solids and cut back a bit on formula. He was very cranky, runny nose and eventually ended up constipated. He had a big hard poop with blood in it.

Now he is back on his regular formula for apx 10 days, eating fruits and vegies with mixed cereal as well as prune juice being added to formula, apx 3-4 oz per day. He is still constipated. He is having hard small round poops with alot of discomfort. The doctor recommended suppositories daily ?! as well as cutting out his cereal until he starts going normally again.

I did use a suppository but his poop is still hard and he is very cranky.

Is he too young to be holding back his stool? He is kicking his feet alot and grunting quite a bit.

How would I know if his bowels are impacted?

Can I or should I use the mineral oil and metamucil treatment you recommend for constipation because of his age?

How do I know the dosage of mineral oil because he is not going on the toilet?

I hope you can help. Thanking you in advance.

Gwynne and Mason.

Hi, Gwynne and Mason.

If he is not "witholding" he soon will be. Start the mineral oil and metamucil at once and you will likely prevent the psychological part of this problem. You will notice the oil in his diaper when it is too high a dose.

Let us know how he does. You might also start some probiotics (see the archives) since not having enough of them could explain ALL of the problems he has already had.

Walt

Dear Dr. Stoll,

You stated Mason not having enough probiotics could explain ALL the problems he's had.

Does this include the milk protein intollerance?

Thank you. Gwynne.

Yes, Gwynne.

A lack of probiotics would tend to cause dairy intolerance. HOWEVER, once that intolerance had developed, just correcting the lack of probiotics will not resolve the dairy intolerance until it had been totally eliminated for about 6 months AFTER correcting the probiotics.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Dr. Stoll,

Your answers have been very much appreciated, I can't image how busy you must be. I will do my homework on probiotics, since I am not familiar with them and let you know how I make out.

Thanks again, Gwynne & Mason.

Dr. Stoll,

I have done some research and have decided on a few things, maybe you can help to solidify my course of action.

I am going to start Mason on a hypo-allergenic pre-digested formula I think he might be allergic to the soy also. Start the probiotics, probably Flora Source as well as continue the MO and Metamucil treatment (not sugar-free). I will do this for 6 months and then re-introduce a milk based formula. Does this seem like too much of a change?

When he was first born he was on anti-biotics for 2 days because of a high fever, cause unknown. Do you think this could have been the start of the dysbiosis? Thank you. Gwynne.

Yes, anti-biotics kill beneficial gut bacteria also...

pro-biotics (think opposite of anti-biotics) replaces the missing beneficial bacteria.

Thanks, Gwynne.

Tha antibiotic history is perfect for what has happened to this kid.

You will probably find that his symptoms will change pretty quickly with the probiotics although there is a lot to repair since his docs did not recognize THEIR role in all of this. The hypersensitivitiues will take the longest (about 6 months).

I want to take a quick moment and thank you for everything. I have always believed in cause and effect. There has been alot of cancer in family history and I always thought it was rooted from stress. Now I realize it is only PART of the problem. I have learned so much (and have ALOT more to go) from this BB and your page regarding myself and son and I've only just started! Thank you for this opportunity. I have seen alot of Doctors (?), being a part of a public funded health care system (Canada) and none of them TAUGHT me in 30 years what you have in just a few days. I'm off to buy your book and start on our road of wellness. Thank you again. Gwynne and Mason.
