Dr. Stoll
I feel as if I could write a book, but will try to keep it short as possible.
1998 will mark 20th year [I'm 40] that I've been "stopped up". I go to bed feeling like a pregnant women, wake up the same and pretty much throghout the whole day. I couldn't begin to count the time I spend in a day trying to have a movement. I know this sounds crazy, but a doctor [military] told me tobacco would help "stimulate", so I smoke when trying to go. YUCK!! Now you can imagine the stress that comes when someone mentions a overnight trip or vacation.
With out a doubt [after reading this BBS] I have LGS. And probally in a big way. Seems just about everything I take
[vitamin/herb/etc] causes a reaction, meaning my face breaks out. Not just small bumps, but big cysts, painful, lasting weeks and leaving scars. I look in the mirror and want to just puke.
If I sound angry, I guess I am. See and hear people whose
diet is pizza, burgers, fries and softdrinks, [I live with one] or users of drugs and alcohol, and they don't have these problems. They are basicly happy productive people.
I try to walk the straight and narrow, and what do I get....
Where did I go wrong? Tried the fiber and MO, but not much help. Tried series of colonics, no change. I drink at least of 2 qts of water a day. Supplements include enzymes and HCL. Don't eat a lot, usually one meal a day. Nothing worse than being hungry and constipated at the same time. Tried cascara sagrada with some help, but here again it seems to cause havic getting into my bloodstream.
I could go on but I think you get the picture. [Skinny guy
5'11" 125lbs, constipated with bumps all over his face]
Kinda hard to have much self confidence. I feel/know I'm
not the person, husband, or father I can or want to be.
I got all three books you recomend, read yours with much understanding, then tried "Mind as a Healer", couldn't seem to "connect" with him. Want to try and learn skilled relaxation if thats what it takes. Pardon me for saying this
but that seems like a "yuppie" thing. I guess I'm a country boy with a city diesease. Can I go straight to the workbook? I feel the first order of business is to get myself regular.
Any idea of what I might try next? I saw a product made from
aloe, but directions said not to use for more than 2 weeks. I want to do a "cleanse" but until this happens would just be "stiring up mud at the bottom of the bucket".
Forgive me if I've taken up too much space and time, just don't know what else to do.
Thank you doesn't seem enough for one who so freely shares
of his TIME and KNOWLEDGE. May God bless...
Steve

Dear Steve,
First of all, let's deal with the constipation. THEN, when you are feeling better, lets deal with what you are learning from your reading.
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE MO & FIBER TO NOT WORK! These things work by mass action, are not absorbed and have nothing to do with your physiology at all. Every bit that you take orally ends up in your stool. The more you take, the more stool you will have. Taking enough will ALWAYS result in many bowel movements every day and all of them softer than you want.
For this approach not to work, you could not have done what I recommended in my articles about constipation in children. The same mechanisms work for adults; the doses are just greater.
You cannot hurt yourself by taking lots of metamucil and mineral oil. Re-read what I have on my home page & let's get your questions straightened out before you try this again.

Dear Steve,
I have had similar problems. I hope you start feeling better soon. One change I really noticed that helped is by changing what I ate. Dr Stoll writes we should eat a whole food diet and has a wonderful book he recommends.
I wonder if eating foods that help one be more regular and avoiding those that tend to constipate might also help you along with the remedy Dr Stoll gave you.
Some of the foods to help with constipation are:
whole grains
carrots
oats
fruits (pears are good)
prune juice etc..
and avoid the refined sugars and flours. Those can really cause problems. Eating alot of cheese, milk and yogurt can cause problems for some people.
This worked for me in the past.
Good luck!

Dr. Stoll-
I posted a question a few days ago and someone answered part of it, but now my post is gone! I mentioned a specific product so maybe that is why it's been deleted, so I will try to rephrase my question.
In your archives related to withholding of stools in children, you advise giving mineral oil to the child. My question is this: would a product that blends omega 3 and 6 oils yield the same results as the mineral oil?
Thanks......

Hi, Lisa.
The reason mineral oil works is that it is NOT absorbed. These other oils work for what they work because they ARE absorbed.
However, there is some recent research that indicates that essential oils are of significant benefit to the lining ot the leaking gut. Many times chronic constipation is related to leaky gut. So, for THOSE people the essential oils might be beneficial. However, the MO works as a mechanical softening agent. It affects the stool not the person.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the explanation. At this point, I'm prettty sure the withholding is psychological due to one bad instance of constipation shortly after a zinc status test. But my son's fear of the pain is so strong....well, I'm amazed at how he can hold it in!!
Update for you.
As you said many times you felt that something was being missed in diagnosing the root cause for my son's food allergies. Well, we saw Leo G once and advised to go on Gotschall's Specific Carb Diet. We did, and my son did well on it except for the fact that he kept becoming "allergic" to the various nut flours we used. So after a year and a half, I ran out of nuts to use. Dr. G said EPD seemed to be the only choice. Instead of flying up to see him every 2-3 months I elected to start seeing Stephen E in Atlanta. He ran A LOT of tests, and a hair analysis from GSDL showed a very high level of mercury. So we did a 24 hr urine analysis after a shot and a suppository.( I'm not sure if I can mention the products and have this posted). It came back real high for mercury and fairly high for lead. So we have just started chelation. So Dr. E feels this may be the root of all my son's immune system problems. I sure hope so. He's starting kindergarten in the fall, and it would be so nice to be able to send him a sandwich for lunch!
So, with this info, would mineral oil be contraindicated during chelation? I don't want to strip to many minerals out of him.

Dear Lisa,
Mineral oil only effects fat soluble vitamins because those vitamins ARE soluble in oil. It has nothing to do with minerals.
This is not the time to sit back & hope that this new discovery will do the trick forever (even though there is a chance that it might). Now is the time for you to become a real student of this so that at least some of the other contributing factors can be dealt with at the same time.
The reason that he eventually became allergic to more & more things is because of his LGS & likely C-RS.
Good Luck!
