Are there any effective, natural remedies for occassionally bleeding hemorrhoids? I already eat a very high fiber, near vegetarian diet, so I don't know what else to do.
Thanks.
Bill

Dear Bill,
If you will grant me the expression (since I used to have it too). The most common cause of chronic hemorrhoids is being a tight a--. In other words, chronic and habitual tension of the levator ani blocks the venous return of the arterial blood that can force itself past the tight muscle and so the veins swell into typical hemorrhoids. So long as the tension is there, hemorrhoids surgically removed will still recur eventually.
Of course, chronic constipation or straining at stool (as well as having the habit of reading on the toilet) will add stress to the area and help this problem to form--although it STILL would likely not happen without the muscle tension.
SO, in the end, getting rid of the tight a-- is the most important single thing to do.
When I first started practice, I was in this little town where there had not been a new physician for 25 years. Within a couple of months, I was working day & night, 7 days a week. Within a year I had severe hemorrhoids & was told my only hope was a hemorrhoidectomy. Every few months I was in the emergency room having a thrombosed hemorrhoid surgically excised.
Within 6 months of practicing an effective skilled relaxation technique at least twice a day, my hemorrhoids were totally gone. I never had a hemorrhoidectomy. All my colleagues (and I) could hardly believe it since all our "science" says that hemorrhoids NEVER go away without surgery. That was 20 years ago & they have never returned.
These techniques have been discussed many times right here on this BB. Look at the FAQ page & the archives.
THEN, if you still have questions, write again. As your hemorrhoids go away, please share your experiences with the BB so others with this "tight a--" condition will begin to see that they are not at the mercy of the knife.

Dr. Stoll,
Thanks for the information and the laugh. I think you are pretty much right on. But why can't I read? I actually thought that would relax me, instead of just sitting there wondering if I'm ever going to go.

Bill... Some folks have found some releaf from this condition thru Reflexology. Not just Reflexology of the foot, but of the hands also. There are some great books out there on this subject. I do my Reflexology self-treatments with one of those huge hand held massagers that look like a warclub. I am amazed at times, at the releaf this can bring for various maladys. Good foot and hand charts are neccessary, and available in the books on this subject. There is a fair amount of info available on line also. Look into it. It might work for you, and the worst result is you will learn how to give yourself and others great hand and foot massages. What a deal!

Thanks, Bill, for the grin.
NO ONE should ever go to the bathroom for stooling until the urge becomes acute. THEN, they will sit down, have their movement & get up.
If you have to go & strain (or wait) something is wrong. This is an easy problem to resolve. If you have it let's discuss it & resolve it. No more books in the bathroom!

Dr. Stoll,
If you already read my post up top then you know the fiber has helped my constipation, although I know that is just relieving the symptoms and not the problem. And I agree that you shouldn't go to sit on the bowl until you have the urge to go, which is how I always lived my life - until I started seeing alternative doctors, and reading their books.
They all tell me that if you are not going at least twice a day, which I never have, that you should train yourself to go. And this involves sitting on the bowl at the same times every day, preferably after breakfast and exercising, until you go. They said this retrains your bowels. I found it just caused me stress from worrying if I would go or not, wasting time sitting for a half hour at a time, and hemorrhoids from occassionally straining because I couldn't go at these appointed times. What do you think about 'training the bowels'?
Thanks,
Bill

I think you should listen to your body and not those idiot doctors!

Dear Bill,
These recommendations remind me of the puritan potty training atitudes of the last century.
Your bowel will train itself if you give it enough fiber to work with. It will tell you when to go and that is OK.
A common pattern is that it will tell you when you first get up. There are many patterns. Just let your colon tell you when.
It might be once, twice or thrice a day. Everyone is different. Soft & easy to move is the goal.
