Heart Pain

Dr.Stoll, 1/26/00
I find that I get bad heart pain often. I am 20 years old, and have been getting this pain on and off through out the past 5 or 6 years. It FEELS like it is in my heart and is like a sharp stabbing pain when it occurs. Sometimes it is very faint, other times it very strong and hurts very badly like a knife twisting in my chest. My husband thinks this may just be heart burn but I have no other heartburn syptoms, and it ONLY occurs on my left upper chest side. It occurs most when I am stressed out or worried, or anxious, all of which I am frequently, to be honest. I went to a doctor when I was 16 years old about this, with my mother, who has mitro valve prolapse and a heart murmur. We thought there might be some kind of genetic connection, but almost to the point of scoffing at us the doctor said there was no problem and I was normal. I wonder though if he couldn't tell because of course the pain wasn't occuring at that exact time in the doctor's office. I try to feel my heartbeat when it happens but am not skilled enough to know any difference except that the pain is there. What I am wondering is, especially when attached to stress, is this normal? I am perfectly heathly otherwise and only worry that this might be something more serious, I mean this is my one and only heart!!! I am of normal weight and I eat okay, for a busy 20 year old, I suppose. I do drink an awful lot of soda and I wonder- could the carbonation be causing excess gas in my system to cause pain like this when digested??? I also do not drink any alcohol or smoke, so there is no problem from either of these things. I am anxious to get a response from you about this, even if you just had some thoughts on ways to help me stop stressing and worrying too much. I find that is a problem that has gotten progressively worse as I've gotten older, with more responsibilities, ect. I mean something it constantly nagging me at the back of my mind and it's caused a lot of anxiety now. I would love to be free of SO much worry or to be significantly reduced of it (as I know EVERYONE worrys) Well I will wrap this up and will wait for an answer. Thankyou so much!!!!!

Hi, Nicole.

This is NOT heart pain!!!

This is classical costochondritis. See the link I have prepared for you below. Once you think you understand it as much as you can glean from that, if you still have questions, write again.

You could IMMEDIATELY get rid of the symptoms by seeing a Certified Rolfer although the relief would not be permanent (a year or so). In the end, the only solution is understanding the process and doing SR.

You also need to learn something about stress, bracing and SR. Use the search engine and look in the archives.

See the glossary for any unfamiliar terms.

As you get over this, share your experiences with the BB so others do not have to go through what you have. EVERY doc who has seen you knows all this stuff but, since you were concerned about your heart, they figured their job was done once they determined that it was not. WHY did not they tell you this stuff???

Walt
