I started having pain on the right side of my chest roughly two months ago. At first, I thought it was related to ARD, which I have suffered from for many years. But about two weeks later, I began having pain in my back on the opposite side of the chest pain. The sites are very sensitive to pressure, and the points of pain are very localized. Can costochondritis affect the back as well as the chest, and can pain be deferred to other parts of the body? Now, after two months of dealing with this pain, I am having pain in my right shoulder and wake up frequently in the middle of the night with my right arm asleep, regardless of whether I am sleeping on it or not. I am beginning to become alarmed and worry that there might be something really wrong with me. Just wondering if these symptoms fall under those associated with costochondritis, and if so, what can be done to alleviate the deferred pain?

Amy, In my case I had the same problems you had years ago and just let it continue, until it just locked me up. I found in my case that rolfing helped greatly for the short term to get relief. My problem was bracing and constant stress. I learned how to cope with the stress, got rolfing sessions and do sr daily. Hope this helps some. Good luck

Yes costo can do this. I've had this for 3 years and I get pain in the front, sides, and back, also into the shoulders. There's a great support group, send an email to:

Hi, Amy.
The word "costochondritis" means rib joint inflammation.
If you have noticed, ribs go all around your chest with their joints in the front and in the back. Normally it also involves the intercostal (between the ribs) muscles so, the pain can be anywhere in the chest, neck, back or any of the "accessory muscles of respiration".
Wht not just get rid of it? THe specific causes are well established and what to do about those causes well within the control of every person who has it. This is a totally unnecessary condition!
